The Ecology Intern position is located in the Boise, Idaho office and will include some travel in the field.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Nature Conservancy is entering its third year of offering internships intended to increase the diversity of our staff. Our 2009 Summer Internship program seeks to enrich and diversify the field of conservation through paid internship opportunities to students currently underrepresented in the conservation field. The internships offered cover a wide range of fields and are available in locations throughout the U.S. and will begin summer 2009.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Landscape Conservation Intern will participate in The Idaho Chapter of the Nature Conservancy’s research efforts to develop methods of assessing and monitoring the condition and trend of arid, sagebrush-steppe rangelands at multiple spatial scales. This multi-year project called The Landscape Toolbox is expected to improve management of rangeland ecosystems by bringing together existing and proven field based, remote sensing and landscape scenario modeling tools for assessing and monitoring rangelands. The Toolbox project, as a whole, is being developed through demonstration projects in the Snake and Columbia River Basin regions. As part of this project, full documentation of the Toolbox, tutorials, and training workshops to help land managers implement the Landscape Toolbox are being developed.

The intern would provide valuable assistance by:
• Helping develop guidance and facilitate review for the Toolbox products.
• Populating our web-based databases.
• Assisting with the creation of training materials.
• Conducting field work, with other field technicians, to assist with data collection for our demonstration projects.
   
The Landscape Conservation Intern will be based in the Idaho TNC office in Boise which houses the Director of Science and Rangeland Ecologist.  The intern will also be conducting some field work in the Big Desert area near Craters of the Moon National Monument.  This work is expected to begin in June and conclude end of September, with flexible start and end dates. Rigorous outdoor activities in remote areas and some overnight camping may be required; however lodging at a local guard station may sometimes be available near the study site. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• A bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental studies, ecology, wildlife, or a closely related field or equivalent combination of education and 1 year of experience.
• Strong communication and writing skills.
• Ability to coordinate information from multiple sources into databases including data entry and report production.
• Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned timeframes. 
• Perform administrative duties emphasizing detail-oriented and numerical tasks.
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
• Experience with GIS (e.g., ArcView, ArcGIS) and mobile GIS/GPS (e.g., ArcPad) software desirable, but not necessary.
• Experience identifying vegetation desirable, but not necessary.
• Experience in orienteering skills, including the use of topographic maps, aerial photographs, and global positioning systems (GPS) helpful.

• Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external parties, in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
• Excellent communication skills, flexibility, and ability to work effectively as a team.
• Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English,

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Field work may require long hours in isolated settings.
• Physical exertion such as hiking with field gear over rough terrain. Work is done in hot or otherwise inclement conditions and presents occasional possibility of injury.
• Willingness to travel to remote areas. Work may require some camping at primitive sites.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• A bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental studies, ecology, wildlife, or a closely related field or equivalent combination of education and 1 year of experience.
• Experience working with computers, Microsoft software, and web browsers.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
