Since, the company has implemented a sound corporate social development programme and an internationally recognised environmental rehabilitation programme to restore the mined dunes to their natural state after mining.
Ecologist
The key purpose of this role is to coordinate all ecological and biodiversity related work at RBM by administering the ecological monitoring and research program.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain and implement RBM's Biodiversity Program.
- Co-ordinate RBM's ecological monitoring and research program, including the the management of the annual CERU (Conservation Ecology Research Unit) research grant.
- Analyze and evaluate trends from the monitoring program, conduct or direct research and make recommendations for improvement.
- Collect biodiversity data, gather input from other researchers and compile action plans (incorporating RBM land as well as adjacent land).
- Contribute to sustainable land use management, including animals, terrestrial, aquatic and plants.
- Maintain timeous communication with regulators, local, provincial and national authorities, local communities and land owners, training and academic institutions regarding ecological processes.
- Assist with public and VIP tours.
- Revise codes of practices and related Standard Operating Procedures on behalf of RBM.
- Align land use options with the formal IDP (integrated Development Plans) of the municipalities.
- Update and maintain a geographical information system and ensure the incorporation of all ecological data and rehabilitation plans.
- Provide continuous feedback to line management on the environmental impact of mining and provide workable mitigation options.
- Provide specialist knowledge and guidance to RBM operational managers.
- Perform fair and reasonable tasks related to the job and working environment, at the discretion of the Manager.
- Maintain and improve safety, health, environmental, quality standards and practices.
- Review and ensure the alignment of the rehabilitation plan with the mine plan.
- Review EMP's (Environmental Management Programs) and provide specialist input.
- Maintain a database of the red data (endangered) species.
- Conduct ad hoc research assignments toward addressing current trends and developments within ecological systems.
