Auckland Council is one of the largest in the South Pacific and our business is to help achieve the Mayor's vision of making Auckland the most liveable city in the world. These roles are in the Biodiversity group within the Environmental Services Unit.

The Environmental Unit provides programme, project and technical advisory services to contribute to the protection and enhancement of the region's natural, built and cultural resources.  The unit has a broad portfolio including land, water and coastal management, built and cultural heritage, biosecurity, and environmental programmes.  Staff work with landowners, community groups, schools, businesses and industry, and provide input into policy development and resource consenting.

About the roles

Ecologist  Central/South region, fulltime, permanent.

The purpose of this role is to co-ordinate the provision of specialist ecological expertise into the protection and restoration of indigenous ecosystems, habitats and biodiversity including threatened species, through the provision of technical expertise and input into operational programmes.

Based in Manukau you would be responsible for providing ecological advice to enable Council to meet its statutory obligations.   Ideally, you will be an ecologist with strong botanical skills and have worked within a regulatory framework.  You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to present scientific information in an easily understood manner. Familiarity with and ability to use GIS effectively would be an advantage.  You will work with a team of seven ecologists and biodiversity advisors.  

Senior Ecologist - 1 role, part time 16hours per week, fixed term until November 2012.

This two day a week position for an experienced ecologist with excellent knowledge of terrestrial ecology and statutory requirements has become available. You will need to have excellent communication skills, a high level of GIS knowledge and the ability to produce high quality, easily understood scientific reports in short timeframes.  Initially for a fixed term while we assess how best to fill this position, this is your opportunity to work within a team of nine ecologists and biodiversity advisors and contribute to the biodiversity outcomes for the North and West of Auckland. 

Regional Advisor Ecology - 1 role, full time, fixed term until July 2013.

The purpose of this role is to provide ecological expertise, externally and into Auckland Council programmes, policies, and statutory and non-statutory processes to ensure a strategic regional focus is maintained and that scientifically-sound, best practice methods are developed, advocated for, and implemented consistently throughout the region. You will proven collaboration skills and ideally a broad ecological background.

Skills and experience

  • Excellent knowledge of NZ ecology
  • Experience in writing ecological reports and assessments.
  • Very good natural science survey, monitoring and research skills including well developed knowledge of experimental design and sampling methods, and competence in methods of statistical analysis commonly employed in ecology.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, GIS, typical ecological analysis software.
  • A  tertiary qualification in a  relevant discipline
  • full driver's license is essential.
