BACKGROUND
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world’s leading conservation membership union established over 70 years ago, and composed of over 1,400 member- organizations of both government and civil society organizations with the input of more than 18,000 experts. IUCN’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.
IUCN ROWA is currently implementing a new project in Jordan aiming at enhancing climate resilience of biodiversity hotspots in Jordan, funded by the Global Affairs Canada GAC. The project will include a revision of the protected areas network in Jordan using systematic conservation planning, and will involve forest landscape restoration activities in pilot areas within Petra and Shoubak southern Jordan.
The objective of this position is to support the implementation of biodiversity-related activities of the project “Enhancing Climate Resilience of biodiversity hotspots in Jordan”, including the systematic conservation planning assessment for protected areas, Forest Landscape Restoration FLR and Nature based solutions NBS during the project lifetime which extends over the course of three years. This includes conducting background research, participating in field surveys and facilitating stakeholder consultations.
The incumbent is expected to support the project’s technical consultants and experts in coordination with the program manager of the Protected Areas, World Heritage and Biodiversity Program and the project coordinator. JOB DESCRIPTION
IUCN – ROWA is seeking the support of an Ecologist with a strong background in biodiversity conservation and protected areas system planning and forest landscape restoration for the effective and successful delivery of the project in alignment with the donor requirements and IUCN’s policies. The Ecologist will be working under the direct supervision of the Program manager of the Protected Areas, World Heritage and Biodiversity Program and will be based in Amman, Jordan with frequent travel to the project field sites in Petra, Shoubak and different protected areas and other remote locations across Jordan. The contract duration will be for one year with possible extension.
Below is a description of scope of work intended for the Ecologist:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager of Protected Areas, World Heritage and Biodiversity Program at IUCN ROWA, and in coordination with the project coordinator and other project staff, the Ecologist will have the following specific duties and responsibilities:
- The Ecologist will play a key role in supporting and ensuring the effective implementation of the project activities related to enhancing climate resilience of biodiversity hotspots in Jordan, including the systematic conservation planning for protected areas, forest landscape restoration and pilot interventions related to nature-based solutions.
Under the direct supervision of the program manager of Protected areas, World Heritage and Biodiversity Program, the incumbent will be responsible for carrying out the following specific tasks:
Key tasks:
• Compiling and collecting data and reports related to previous studies on protected areas, distribution of key species and impact of climate change on biodiversity in Jordan.
• Participating in field visits and ecological gap assessments, and validation visits related to protected area system planning.
• Provide specialist ecological advice relating to project locations, and recommend appropriate actions to enable compliance with project document and donor requirements.
• Provide advice on the scope and range of ecological assessments required for the efficient implementation of project activities.
• Support the project team and external consultants in conducting the systematic conservation planning assessments for protected areas in Jordan
• Support the project team and external consultants in conducting climate vulnerability assessments for target species.
• Provide technical input and support the project team in developing TOR’s for assignments related to Protected area system planning and forest landscape restoration, and other relevant activities.
• Support the program manager and project coordinator in supervising consultants working on PA system planning, biodiversity vulnerability assessments and other activities related to the project.
• Co-facilitate and co-deliver training workshops related to systematic conservation planning and forest landscape restoration for a wide range of government, and non-government stakeholders and local communities.
• Support the program manager and project coordinator in reviewing the logical framework of the project as needed in relevance to biodiversity conservation.
• Support the implementation of forest restoration activities and pilot Nature-based solutions in a biodiversity positive manner.
• Support the program manager and project coordinator in communicating the findings of ecological assessments and their implications to project teams, managers and decision makers including the drafting of different types of briefs and communication summaries
• Support the program manager and project coordinator in reviewing the relevant deliverables and technical reports of the consultants where relevant.
• Support the program manager and project coordinator to track the biodiversity related activities and track their contribution to the IUCN’s program, using the IUCN’s project portal and other project management and M&E platforms.
• Participate in developing technical progress reports covering progress in the implementation of the biodiversity component.
Others:
- Work closely with the program manager to contribute to project proposals related to biodiversity conservation and protected areas and to sustain the funds in alignment with IUCN’s program.
- Ensure appropriate alignment of the project activities with IUCN ROWA regional initiatives and work program.
- Represent effectively IUCN and its partners in local and regional events as assigned by the line manager
- Performing any other duties as requested by the line manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BSc degree in biology, biodiversity conservation, forestry or any other related fields. An advanced degree is preferred.
• At least 7 years of experience in conducting biodiversity research within protected areas or biodiversity hotspots.
• At least 3 years of experience with regional or international organizations, or large-scale projects preferably in Jordan or in the ROWA region.
• Good understanding of protected area system planning principles, forest landscape restoration FLR and climate vulnerability issues within protected area planning
• Ability to compile large amounts of information succinctly into a coherent document for conservation practitioners and government officials.
• Excellent facilitation and coordination skills, the ability for managing the timely and effective delivery of both quantity and quality work on time.
• Contribution to 10+ publications related to biodiversity conservation and PA planning.
• Strong communication, facilitation and presentation skills and an ability to prepare appropriate and timely reports to a wide range of audiences and cultures.
• Time management skills including an ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines.
• Fluent writing and speaking literacy in both Arabic and English is preferred
• Familiarity with GIS applications and SDM’s is preferred
• Proven ability to liaise and work with a range of stakeholders including government agencies, the private sector, and local community, and in support of regional and national institutions
• Demonstrated commitment to achieving biodiversity conservation and livelihoods goals.
• A team player who is able to contribute effectively to collaborative issues, and to demonstrate innovation and leadership, as appropriate.
• A good understanding of IUCN’s mission and a general attitude of being of service to others.
