Description

The Ecology & Hydrology department within Natural Power is made up of a diverse range of ecologists and hydrologists with considerable technical experience and expertise from having worked on renewable projects for over 12 years. The department therefore requires additional support to our technical teams in the delivery of projects for clients throughout the UK and abroad. 

The Opportunity 

Due to our on-going success, we are looking to recruit a Senior Ecologist into our office in Falkirk.  Reporting into the Principal Ecologist and working closely with wider Ecology team, you will be responsible for providing onshore ecology services to clients and offshore services where circumstances require, within the renewables industry. The senior ecologist will provide input, both internal and externally, on all taxa associated with projects (i.e. birds, terrestrial mammals and botany). 

A selection of main duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Provide advice on ecological issues in relation to renewable projects, during all project phases (consenting, construction, post-construction, and decommissioning), to both internal staff and external clients and regulators.
  • Prepare and provide written technical reports.
  • Prepare and provide scoping reports and EIA chapters.
  • Compile Information for Habitat Regulations Assessment.
  • Provide Input into survey recommendations, design and data analysis.
  • Line management of junior staff
  • Liaise with clients, landowners and statutory consultees throughout projects.
  • Business development and tendering for new work.
  • Manage projects, including timescales and finance.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Experience 

You will hold a degree or equivalent in a biological, environmental or ecological discipline and be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge in the ecology and identification of a wide range of taxa, such as birds, terrestrial mammals and botany. You will have a proven track record in a comparable role from a similar ecological and or environmental focused consultancy.  Ideally you will have experience in the following: 

  • The renewable industry and client requirements
  • Compiling EIA chapters, preferably on and offshore renewable EIAs and the overall planning system.
  • Writing technical reports, preferably for renewable projects
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding ecology for on and off-shore construction projects, and mitigation measures
  • UK and European legislation in relation to protected habitats and species
  • Habitats Regulations Assessments
  • Project management skills
  • Organising and conducting ecological surveys, both on and offshore
  • Multiple project management
  • Client management and business development 

You will be highly meticulous, organised and self-motivated with and ability to work unsupervised to strict deadlines with an often conflicting workload.  You will possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with an ability to build and develop relationships with key stakeholders involved in projects.  This role involves frequent travel, as such; you will require a full UK driving license. 

The position is based in our office in Falkirk, moving to Stirling towards end of 2013.
