Job Description

We are seeking to strengthen our South-Eastern Ecology and EIA team and this presents an exciting opportunity for an Ecologist and/or Senior Ecologist to join our Team to be based in our Winchester, London or Epsom offices.
The role will be to:
  • Contribute to and help develop the ecology and EIA business both internally and externally (for Senior Ecologist role);
  • To provide technical support to other members of staff (for Senior Ecologist role);
  • To work with ecologists and other consultants (environmental scientists, engineers, planners) throughout the company to provide a consistent and integrated service to clients;
  • To continue to develop technical skills
The majority of work is likely to be regional, but there will be technical collaboration and networking, with the 60 or so ecologists working within the company around the U.K.
At all levels our ecologists are committed to providing specialist advice, in connection with infrastructure development and other projects, including protected species assessments, habitat management plans, mitigation, site restoration and rehabilitation measures, specialist services for planning applications and environmental impact assessments. We also provide an expert witness service in support of public enquiries, appeals and tribunals.

 


Requirements

Successful candidates will ideally have:

  • A degree in a relevant discipline (preferably MSc for Senior Ecologist role);
  • Membership of Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM);
  • We are looking for strong experience as an ecologist in a similar role, preferably with a major consultancy;
  • Should be able to demonstrate that they have experience of project management, budget control and an awareness of risk;
  • Able to show an aptitude for staff management (for Senior Ecologist role);
  • A good understanding of the role of consultants within the commercial sector and have the vision and ability to identify and expand new areas of business for their ecology team (for Senior Ecologist role);
  • Phase 1 habitat survey and protected species survey capability, ideally with an area of specialisation.. A survey licence for one or more protected species would be beneficial. We are particularly interested in candidates who are licensed bat surveyors;
  • Capability and/or experience of producing and implementing protected species development licence applications;
  • Experience of EIA preferred and capability and experience of designing and implementing large scale ecological mitigation schemes;
  • Experience in writing technical reports and proposals;
  • An interest in and/or experience of wider environmental and sustainability issues and ability to respond to business opportunities in these areas.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting existing teams (for Senior Ecologist role);
  • Production of reports and protected species development licence applications
  • Preparation of bids/proposals and development of new areas of business (for Senior Ecologist role);
  • Undertake nature conservation/ecology assessments
  • Undertake field surveys
  • To work effectively as a team player in delivering a first class service to our clients, both internal and external
  • Management of budgets and deadlines for projects
  • Management of own time and workload in collaboration with other team members
  • Development of technical and other skills, paying attention to CPD requirements

Flexible over travel and hours, especially during spring/summer survey season when it is a requirement to be available to work in the evenings and early mornings and be away from home for one or more nights per week, on a regular basis.
