The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. We do marine science that has practical benefit to the real world, providing high quality, large-scale and long-term research that is used by governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas.

AIMS researchers at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to the best tools and equipment like the National Sea Simulator, cutting edge laboratories and our fleet of research vessels.

About this Opportunity

As an experienced statistician and modeller, you will conduct nationally and internationally recognised marine research by applying advanced skills in statistical and mathematical analysis and modelling to long-term, large data sets to solve complex problems in marine ecology, biodiversity and ecosystem health in a dynamic and changing environment.

You will be capable of delivering cutting-edge research to develop innovative analytical methods and computational tools applicable to ecological studies of marine ecology, biodiversity, water quality or climate change. This role offers a high level of autonomy in managing a research portfolio, developing new and creative research pathways and building collaborative partnerships to advance research efforts. Additionally, you will lead, manage and mentor a small group of ecological statisticians and modellers.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a world leading organisation with attractive working conditions including a 9-day fortnight, generous leave entitlements, transportation to site, a salary range of $131,799 - $168,067 and 15.4% superannuation. This role is being offered for a minimum 5 year term and will be based in Townsville, Queensland.

About You

You will have a strong reputation as a statistician or mathematician with the proven ability to manage a portfolio of tasks including the analysis and interpretation of complex experimental, survey, and/or monitoring data. You will be able to demonstrate:

  • PhD and significant postdoctoral experience in the application of quantitative skills in ecology or marine science;
  • Expertise in the use of R, Python, MatLab or equivalent, and their application to the manipulation and analysis of large data sets;
  • Proven ability to lead and initiate quality research efforts, fostering a collaborate research culture amongst multi-disciplinary researchers; and
  • Demonstrated experience successfully obtaining research sponsorship.
