POSITION SUMMARY
The SLELO Ecological Restoration Crew Member will help implement restoration/ecological management projects and invasive species management projects within the biologically rich and ecologically important SLELO PRISM region to include the counties of St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Oswego, Oneida and Lewis outside of the Adirondack Park. Successful candidates will work as a team to collect ecological data and implement various conservation and restoration projects including early detection surveillance and rapid response efforts. Typical activities include monitoring vegetation communities, target indicator species monitoring and invasive species management actions. This position will work closely with other TNC staff, regional partners and contractors to accomplish project tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Ecological Restoration Crew Members will participate in biological monitoring, invasive species identification, mapping and control. This may include one or more of the following functions:
Use GPS technology for tracking species locations and control activities.
Conducts plant and animal monitoring.
Prepare detailed field reports.
Ensures consistent and quality ecological data collection and management.
Removal of exotic species and/or conducts species monitoring.
Maintains tools and equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers.
May work under infrequent supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma and at least one year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management
Experience in recognizing New York flora and fauna
Experience operating various types of equipment (ATV, 4-wheel drive truck, canoe)
Experience performing physical work.
Ability to swim.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma and 1-2 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Experience with ecosystem restoration and invasive species control preferred.
Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required after field training.
Experience collecting biological data and conducting ecological monitoring protocols.
Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; canoes, lawn mower, ATV, two-way radio, brush cutter.
Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
Working knowledge of GPS technology.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
