Description

Natural Power’s Ecology and Hydrology department currently seeks a highly motivated Ecological Modeller to join our team based inFalkirk(exact level offered will be dependent on experience).  Reporting to the Principal Ecologist, you will work with the existing data analyst to providing statistical support within the Ecology and Hydrology Team for clients within the wind and wave/tidal industries.  In this role, you will primarily be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities: 

Duties 

  • Conduct a variety of data analyses contributing to the ecological characterisation of sites, assessment of potential ecological risks associated with renewable energy developments, and identification of environmental impacts of existing developments.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of statistically robust data collection and survey methodology within the team.
  • Facilitate accurate interpretation and appropriate presentation of survey data and the results of statistical analyses in technical reports for clients and peer-reviewed publications. 
  • Contribute to the development of procedures for analyzing the typically complex ecological data collected during ecological surveys for renewable energy projects.
  • Provide training to other staff members regarding best practice for data analysis and data presentation.
  • Work closely with colleagues to meet client deadlines and required objectives.
  • Attend regular team meetings.
  • Build and maintain positive effective working relationships.
Qualifications

You will be trained to degree level or higher in a biological, environmental or ecological discipline and/or statistical data analysis, and be able to demonstrate an interest in ecological issues relating to renewable energy and excellent quantitative skills. A doctorate in a relevant subject area may be an advantage. 

 

You will have specialist knowledge and experience in: 

  • Use of R for statistical analysis and graphical data representation.
  • Use of standard ecological data analysis tools such as generalised linear modelling, generalised additive modelling, mixed effects modelling and multivariate techniques.

 

Knowledge of any of the following areas would be beneficial: 

  • Techniques such as population viability analysis, distance sampling, avian collision risk modelling, underwater collision risk modelling, and current methods for assessing abundance and distribution of organisms.
  • Analysis of complex ecological datasets including zero-inflation and spatial and temporal autocorrelation.
  • Use of GIS for spatial data analysis.
