The Wilderness Society (TWS) is a national non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting America’s wild landscapes. Founded in 1935, TWS has over 450,000 members, 170 staff and an annual budget of $25 million. We seek an experienced field representative to implement a multi-year public advocacy campaign to defend and secure protections for the wildlands, wildlife habitat and wild rivers across the Dolores River Basin of southwest Colorado. This TWS representative would join a strong, multi-organization coalition working together to protect and improve the management of public and private lands across the region.

The Wildlands Coordinator will work with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Forest Service, state wildlife agencies, local elected officials, congressional staff, other conservation and recreation groups, local citizens, and other TWS staff to develop and pursue an environmentally sound and economically sustainable management vision for the region. The Coordinator will initially focus on leading TWS and coalition participation in several pending federal land management planning processes to secure administrative protections for key waters and wildlands, including by drafting joint comments, applying emerging scientific and economic research, and promoting strategic involvement of the conservation community, diverse allies and the public. In addition, the Coordinator will play a coordinating role in drafting comments and responding to proposed agency projects and policies to defend wildlands in the region from deleterious activities such as oil and gas development, off-road vehicles and other threats, and help support other groups in addressing uranium mining. Finally, the Coordinator will work with TWS and partners in the Dolores River Basin Coalition to help develop and implement overall campaign strategy, conduct outreach to land managers, elected officials, and the media, and ultimately to build support for permanent legislative protection of key wildlands and waters within the Lower and Upper Dolores River Basin.

Responsibilities

The Dolores River Basin Wildlands Coordinator will play a lead role for The Wilderness Society in the conservation community’s Dolores River Basin Campaign by:

  • Serving as the on-the-ground lead in pending BLM Uncompahgre and Grand Junction Resource Management Plan revisions, in close coordination with TWS staff and coalition partners, to develop and promote conservation visions for these landscapes thru these multi-year planning processes.

  • Working with local groups to influence the almost-finished management plans for the Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnison National Forest and joint BLM/FS San Juan Public Lands management plans to promote trans-agency visions for wildlands across the Basin, and to help review and challenge these final plans as necessary.

  • Specifically promoting protection of wilderness-quality lands, both administratively and ultimately through legislation, in coordination with the Dolores Campaign and Colorado Wilderness Network.

  • Helping oversee and implement NEPA-watch defense work to protect key lands in the Basin by writing comments to respond to inappropriate agency projects and threats, particularly from oil and gas drilling and off-road vehicle use, with some limited support of partners working to address uranium mining.

  • Working with TWS’s Ecological and Economic Research Department to synthesize and apply the latest science and economic information in developing and promoting sound land management strategies.

  • Fostering strong agency relations, conducting “grasstops” outreach to key diverse allies, and supplementing the work of Campaign organizers to help build visible support for the campaign’s goals with local elected officials and regional Congressional offices.

  • Using agency planning and defense efforts to help create momentum, relationships, and public involvement that will be important ultimately in advancing legislative protection campaigns.

  • Working closely with the TWS Central Rockies team and coalition members to guide campaign strategy and implementation, and cultivate local and state media coverage of key campaign issues and messengers.

Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of two years of practical experience in the West (western Colorado or the Dolores River Basin region strongly preferred) influencing conservation issues in the public policy arena, such as direct wilderness advocacy, working on agency federal planning processes, or dealing directly with grassroots organizations, conservation groups, federal, state and/or local agencies in a position which aids in the development, interpretation or implementation of public resource policy.

Education: Master’s degree in wildlife or environmental field preferred, or comparable work experience in natural resource management or related field.

Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines: environmental law, public lands policy or management, applied wildlife or conservation biology; resource economics; wilderness advocacy and legislation; and/or land protection campaign leadership.

  • Familiarity with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and administrative land planning processes.

  • Excellent analytical and verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to write and speak concisely and persuasively.

  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with others, including partnering effectively and collegially with TWS campaign team and coalition partners.

  • Experience building productive relationships with diverse stakeholders, including federal and state agency staff, elected officials, landowners, businesses, sportsmen, and local citizens.

  • Must be ambitious and motivated self-starter, willing to take initiative, with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team, and able to keep a level head when responding to rapid changes in campaign strategies and plans.

  • Must be well organized, accurate, able to perform a wide variety of tasks, and have competent personal computer skills.

  • Direct experience, knowledge, and work in the Dolores River Basin preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Commitment to land protection.

  • Willingness to travel frequently within region, and work occasional weekends and evenings to attend public planning meetings or events as necessary.

The Wilderness Society is an equal opportunity employer and diversity is a core value. The Wilderness Society offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
