Background:  IAP World Services, Inc. has an excellent opportunity for Dockside Sampling Fisheries Biologists to perform contract work for the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).  These positions are located at Key West, FL; St. Petersburg, FL; Panama City, FL; Pascagoula, MS; Golden Meadow, LA; and Galveston, TX.  The position in Key West will start on Jan 15, 2012; positions in all other locations can begin immediately.  IAP World Services is the on-site technical services contractor and supports NOAA/NMFS by hiring and managing qualified individuals to support long and near-term research projects.

Job Summary: Under the direction and coordination of the Fisheries Sampling Branch of the Fisheries Statistics Division, SEFSC Miami Lab, the primary purpose of these positions is to work in the local commuting area and intercept and sample catches from commercial fishing vessels using the Trip Interview Program.  Personnel may also assist with dockside sampling of recreational fishermen as directed by the local NMFS SEFSC Field Office.  Other duties may include:

  • · Conduct State Trip Ticket data editing
  • · Assist with Gulf Shrimp Survey data tabulation, entry, and reconciliation
  • · Provide written reports of the fishery trends and conditions of the area
  • · Point of contact for the local fishing industry
  • · Assist with outreach functions
  • · Must be able to accomplish tasks with minimal supervision
  • · Willingly performs any other miscellaneous job-related duties as required
  • · Some overnight travel will be required

Knowledge: Must be proficient in the use of Gulf of Mexico Fish ID books and keys.  All personnel shall possess an understanding of scientific methods, basic statistical methods, and marine biology, ecology or biology.  Capable of writing reports at the college level and making oral presentations, capable of extracting data from computer and creating graphic illustrations, slides, charts and reports.  All personnel shall be experienced with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.

Education & Experience:

Minimum of a B.S. degree in Biology or other natural science.  M.S. degree in a fisheries related subject is a plus; previous fisheries observer experience is a plus. Consideration will be given to relevant professional experience commensurate with assignment.  Personnel will be hired as a Fisheries Biologist I or Fisheries Biologiest II depending on qualifiacations.  Note city location preference in your application (or all if no preference).
