As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Division Director of Philanthropy is responsible for managing all fund raising strategies for the West Division. The current Division Director is in the process of transitioning into the National Campaign Director role and will be responsible for overseeing the first and largest national campaign in the Trust for Public Land's history. The launch of the 7-year phased campaign will coincide with the organization's 40th anniversary starting in late 2012.

This position has ultimate supervisory authority over the state philanthropy directors within the Division and the institutional giving director. He or she will be responsible for overseeing the annual fundraising plans, engagement strategies for high-capacity TPL donors and prospects within the division in collaboration with philanthropy staff and key senior staff from other departments. The position works closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, two other Division Philanthropy Directors, and the Director of Major Gifts to implement a TPL-wide philanthropy program.

Essential Functions

  • Direct TPL's philanthropy program for the division including major gifts, institutional giving, and statewide giving. Additionally, the Division Director of Philanthropy will ensure the overall integration of TPL wide fundraising strategies by clarifying divisional giving responsibilities while coordinating with currently established donor prospect lists.
  • Align state, divisional, and national strategic and annual plans with revenue and expense projections.
  • Oversee engagement strategies for high-capacity donors while maintaining a portfolio of 10-15 high-level prospects in order to align future revenues with Board expectations.
  • Collaborate cross-organizationally to develop unified philanthropy goals, and increase buy-in from staff and Board members. The Division Director of Philanthropy will also work to improve the management and retention of staff and volunteers who are critical to the future success of TPL.
  • Next year is TPL's 40th anniversary and an opportune time to raise visibility of the brand, including marketing materials around philanthropy. The Director will partner with teams throughout the division to help tell TPL's national story.
  • Staff allocation and resource allocation in philanthropy is a constant challenge within TPL. The Director will ensure resources are divided in a way that will maximize overall impact and future success in fundraising.

Profile: Ideal Candidate for the Division Director of Philanthropy

We seek an energetic individual and proven leader with significant experience in nonprofit fundraising and personnel management. The ability to partner cross-organizationally and manage a remote team to catalyze successful fundraising campaigns will be critical. She/He must demonstrate a personal passion for TPL's mission, demonstrating this passion on a daily basis.

The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive fundraising acumen and the ability to educate non-fundraising team members on best practices in the field. She/He will have significant experience establishing fundraising policies and procedures and growing a fundraising department.

The selected candidate will have demonstrated success in closing major gifts ($100k+) in addition to a proven track record in writing successful grant proposals. Additionally, he or she will possess superior oral and written communication skills while also being highly organized and detail oriented.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic manager and development professional with a high level of energy, and someone who demonstrates a fearless approach when it comes to program communication and raising funds. He or she will be a goal-oriented, self-starter who thrives in an atmosphere that demands results while feeling comfortable in a fluid, informal, change-oriented environment that pushes the envelope in developing new and innovative approaches to philanthropy.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in nonprofit fund raising, including 5 plus years managing staff.
  • Must be well versed in direct solicitations, preferably with an environmental or conservation organization.
  • Experience in writing successful grant proposals and successfully closing major gifts is required.
  • A Bachelors degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel is a must.
