Job Title: Diversity Media Strategist

Department: Communications

Location: Los Angeles, CA or San Francisco, CA

Reports To: National Press Secretary

Summary: The Sierra Club seeks a Diversity Media Strategist to help lead the nation's largest and most effective grassroots environmental organization's efforts to reach new audiences. Candidates must understand that environmental issues are everyone's issues and be eager to engage people of every age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation in the invigorating fight to protect people from the pollution that is making our communities sick. The ideal candidate for has strong professional experience working with communities of color and ethnic media, and should know communications strategy inside out. The Diversity Media Strategist will craft long-term communications plans and help assure that they succeed. He or she will be responsible for responding rapidly to news events and will be adept at building relationships with reporters, bloggers, and other key media contacts. Candidates should be creative self-starters who enjoy collaborating with a group of top communications professionals, all with the goal of protecting our communities and environment. The position will supervise diversity media consultants.

Job Activities:

1. Works with campaign staff and volunteers to build in and implement media strategies for reaching diverse audiences in Sierra Club priority campaigns.

2. Identifies specific audiences for outreach on campaigns and issues; works with vendors and consultants on translation of materials to reach these audiences, by increasing media capabilities to target diverse communities as identified.

3. Crafts and implements long-term and rapid-response strategic vehicles for promoting Sierra Club messages and stories in diversity media, including but not limited to, writing letters to the editor, reports op-eds, radio actualities, press releases, fact sheets, ad copy, and talking points.

4. Drafts diversity communications plans and coordinates communications work around campaigns with web and social media teams, Sierra Magazine, Sierra Club Productions, and other teams.

5. Develops relationships with local, regional, and national diversity reporters and pitches stories to those reporters.

6. Performs research and analysis using a variety of resources to craft appropriate media messages and draft media materials.

7. Trains and coaches staff and volunteers in media skills.

8. Contributes to staff strategy meetings, and stays current on substantive and political developments in major conservation campaigns by reading latest literature, attending meetings and maintaining contact with relevant sources.

9. Supervises Spanish Language Media Consultant and other consultants for diversity media.

10. Develop and maintain diversity media lists and database.

Knowledge and Skills:

-- 3+ years of experience in diverse aspects of volunteer-based environmental movement, including specific experience in communications and grassroots volunteer organizing.

-- Bachelors degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science or related field or combination of education and experience. Master’s Degree desired.

-- Knowledge and experience of how diversity media works, the needs of journalists, and how to get stories placed.

-- Ability to work well with top-level managers, staff and volunteers.

-- Ability to work well under pressure and maintain good working relations with staff and media. Able to work effectively as a team player.

-- Prior experience in communications strategy and staff/volunteer training.

-- Prior experience working with ethnic media, other niche and new media outlets.
