East Devon is independently recognised as an outstanding place and so it follows that its council must also strive to be outstanding – that’s why we’re proud to have achieved Platinum IiP.  Everything we do is aimed at ensuring that East Devon is a place that people want to live in, work in, visit and enjoy.  And we are well placed to achieve this given our district encompasses a World Heritage Coast, two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and nationally and internationally recognised wildlife sites such as the Exe Estuary, East Devon Pebblebed Heaths and the River Axe, as well as a huge range of county wildlife sites and local nature reserves which provide a rich diversity of wildlife and breath-taking vistas.

About the role

An exciting new senior role has been created to help deliver the Council’s ambitions for nature recovery, climate change and securing Biodiversity Net Gain through development.  You will be part of the Council’s Countryside team providing specialist advice to our planners, Landscape Officer and Climate Change Officer to ensure that ecological matters are given due weight in the planning process and that decisions are fully informed by your knowledge and experience. You will lead the Council’s work in developing policy that reflects the emerging Environment Bill and Habitat Regulations and also provide advice to the Countryside team’s nature recovery and rewilding work across our nature reserves and green spaces.

About you

We are looking for someone who is passionate about wildlife and can demonstrate a high level of experience as an ecologist working hand in glove with the planning system. We want someone who can show leadership qualities, build effective relationships and work independently across a diverse range of casework.  You must hold a relevant degree or have equivalent experience and be a Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or other professional body.
