Distance Learning TutorMSc Architecture, Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies, by Distance Learning, at the Graduate School of the Environment, Centre for Alternative Technology.From 1st September 2009 Job description Job Title: Distance Learning TutorHours: 1.0 or 0.5: one full time or two half-time posts. You will state on the application form which of the two options you prefer, and whether you would consider the other. Flexible working is required with occasional small amounts of evening and weekend work.Responsible to: Programme Leader Distance LearningResponsible for: NoneGrade: LecturerSalary In the range £30,318.05 to £34,515.30 pro rata This post is subject to a one-year probationary period and will be reviewed after two years.Scope:This is an exciting opportunity in one of the UK’s largest, most vibrant Master’s programmes: our students bring a wonderful range of backgrounds and experience, with much enthusiasm and commitment. The curriculum of the MSc Architecture, Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies by Distance Learning, which began in September 2008, is broadly equivalent to that of the long-established MSc: Architecture AEES, in which modules are delivered by student attendance at CAT for five days each month. Both courses are validated programmes of the University of East London.The January 2008 external examiner’s report stated: “On the evidence presented to me, the course maintains its reputation as one of the best Masters courses in the environmental field. The staff team is to be congratulated on providing a course which is both rigorous and clearly inspirational.” The GSE also hosts an MSc in Renewable Energy in the Built Environment, a Part 2 Professional Diploma in Architecture, and a programme of Professional Doctorates and PhD’s.You will be taking part in teaching, developing, and expanding a unique course which aims to make full use of the Virtual Learning Environment, (VLE) ‘UEL Plus’ [based on the Blackboard’ system].The ethos of the course, and of the team running it, combines the traditional ethos of high academic standards with that of CAT: respectfulness, openness, solidarity.The duties of the Distance Learning tutors1. Tuition: · Supporting students’ learning by conducting regular tutorials, individual and group, via telephone, email, the VLE and VOIP calls.· Marking and giving feedback on students’ coursework assessment assignments.· Conducting seminars online via the VLE chatroom and VOIP telephone.· Facilitating and moderating student interaction around curriculum activities on the VLE.· Taking part in online workshops advising students on their theses. 2. Curriculum materialsThere is continuous review and development of the study materials and activities, and this is an important and creative part of the tutor’s job, offering great scope and enjoyment.· Developing, editing and preparing (printed) lectures and papers is the most significant part of this requirement. The basic course materials are in place, but tutors take part in their continuous review and development, according to expertise and special interests.· Other development work is permanently ongoing, for example devising practical activities, interactive learning processes, formative assessment quizzes, self-tests, surveys etc., for students. There will be the opportunity, if desired, to deliver occasional specialist lectures to the CAT-attending students. 3. Attendance at the course officeThe DL team are very committed to a collegiate approach, full discussion of all processes and decisions, and a sense of common purpose. All DL staff are able to work from our base in Machynlleth (in the Dyfi Eco Park, by the railway station). However, we will consider applications from ‘distant’ tutors.As a minimum, all tutors are required to attend the office for a set number of days in each month with the exception of August & December. The set period is usually in the second or third week, coinciding with the modules of the attending MSc at CAT. It is then that we conduct staff meetings, reviews, other meetings with DL colleagues and the Student Support Officers, and general catching up. Accommodation is provided. It may be necessary, on very rare occasions, to request all tutors’ presence at other particular times. LiaisonYou will liaise with the DL Programme Leader, the Head of School, fellow tutors and administrative and student support staff.
