Through the GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program, The Nature Conservancy hires undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent college graduates (2014, 2015, and 2016) to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. Our mission is to provide a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academics and the real-world conservation work that contributes to the health and sustainability of our world. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
By working on a wide variety of tasks that are associated with managing a conservation site that has a strong commitment to public outreach, this intern will learn the actual operational, biological and public elements of conservation in today’s world. The intern will be an integral part of The Nature Conservancy’s Central Florida Conservation Program.

The intern’s tasks may include, but are not limited to:

Lead and assist with wildlife surveys and native/invasive population monitoring and controlled burns.
Work on a population density/damage assessment project to quantify the extent of the feral hog situation at the preserve
Conduct Florida Scrub Jay and red-cockaded woodpecker monitoring
Work with Central Florida fire and invasive control staff on-site and on partner agency sites on prescribed fires and invasive survey work
Assist and learn the components of facilities management and volunteer programs
Complete on-the-ground facilities audits and GHG reduction reviews of all structures and vehicles
Assist in simplifying/redoing how we manage volunteers, from recruitment to retention
Assist in youth outreach, including the LEAF Program and local schools and organizations. Design projects we can do to help engage youth year round
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
HS Diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in an undergraduate program, graduate program, or a recent graduate (within two years of graduating from an undergraduate or graduate program) for biology, conservation/environmental studies, forestry, wildlife, ecology, or related field, or equivalent
Experience using MS office, Word, Excel, and navigating the Internet
Demonstrated interest in natural resource management
Strong oral and verbal communication skills
Ability to work outside under hot and physically demanding conditions
Ability to complete a fitness test for participation on prescribed fires: complete a three mile-walk carrying a 45-lb pack within 45 minutes.
Valid driver’s license and good driving record required

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of May 31st – August 5th, 2016.
Housing is provided for the duration of the internship on-site at Disney Wilderness Preserve.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

This position will require working outside in variable weather conditions.
The intern will work under hot, humid, insect-ridden conditions.
AUTO SAFETY POLICY
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

SALARY INFORMATION
$12/hour for those currently enrolled in an undergraduate program
$14/hour for those with undergraduate degrees and/or currently enrolled in a graduate degree program
