Description

The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

Over the years, Rainforest Alliance has sought to engage the financial sector in diverse areas such as: linking small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to supply chain finance and capital finance generally, assisting financial institutions to assess environmental and social risks related to investments; hedge fund and private equity work around sustainability; carbon-finance in the voluntary market; and; sustainable sourcing and environmental impact reduction. Much of this work has been and continues to be carried out in different technical programs. The needs for small scale finance and its role in sustainability warrants a more concerted, coordinated and scaled up effort by Rainforest Alliance.  Therefore the organization has decided to undertake a Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) that provides the home and context for this position.
