Description

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to announce the search for a Director, Science Communications. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. The position will report to the Vice President, Director, External Affairs.

The Director, Science Communications has primary responsibility for developing, implementing and overseeing communications and programmatic outreach strategies.  These include, but are not limited to internal and external communications activities, branding, outreach and education, messaging, and marketing activities as well as collaborating with leaders of our major research programs including the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), and the United States Science Support Program (USSP) to develop and implement a comprehensive, strategic communications plan for scientific information.  This role provides strategic counsel and guidance to senior management on all science communications-related matters:  website strategy including content and design, review design and production of all written and visual outreach and marketing materials including publications, branding, and marketing.  Works closely with ad-hoc committees on planning, organizing and managing scientific communications initiatives..

Qualified applicants must possess a degree (advanced degree preferred) in a relevant field of study and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience leading communications in nonprofit/corporate and/or government agency to include strategic and operational planning for scientific communications outreach; experience with national and local media and a solid understanding of public relations and media techniques including demonstrated knowledge and understanding of generally accepted PR practices and principles as they relate to key responsibilities associated with this position; organized and proven project management skills including experience coordinating broad range of projects and activities simultaneously; proven skill in dealing with print and broadcast media on technical or scientific issues including handling sensitive information; solid track record in outreach strategy, placement, planning, and writing for the scientific community; proficiency in developing budgets; strong problem solving skills; superlative written and verbal communications skills and the ability to respond in a timely fashion to stakeholders’ needs.  This position requires a self-starter with a strong work ethic, and excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects concurrently.  The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a team environment with all departments and possess masterful interpersonal skills to manage business relationships with integrity, finesse, and diplomacy.
