Summary

As one of the few vertically integrated photovoltaic companies, SunPower is uniquely positioned to revolutionize the way photovoltaic systems are designed, installed, and operated. As part of this effort, SunPower‘s Rooftop Product Development Group conceptualizes, defines, and develops photovoltaic system products for commercial and residential rooftop applications, and SunPower is looking for a proven product development leader to manage this effort. 

The role involves engineering design and development of the world’s leading PV mounting systems targeted at residential and commercial rooftop applications. The products are targeted for distribution through both internal direct sales channels and 3rd party distributor and installers. 

The ideal person will have experience managing projects and groups of people; a wide range of experience solving complex problems, organizing work, developing and executing project plans and motivating workers; a deep understanding of engineering principles, concepts, and industry practices; and broad experience in product design, machine design, and testing. Particular expertise with a variety of materials and fabrication techniques is required. Knowledge of roof design and construction, as well as U.S. building codes and standards such as IBC and ASCE considered a plus. Familiarity with European codes and standards is also desirable. Other areas of expertise that would be beneficial are familiarity with industrial design practices, experience with injection molding, or experience with wind tunnel testing. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

• Take a leadership role in the execution of complex engineering projects, providing guidance to more junior engineers 
• Lead cross-functional teams for product development, corrective/preventive action, and process or infrastructure improvements 
• Oversee the work of product development engineers, team members, and consultants. 
• Organize and disseminate information related to the project goals such as cost targets, launch dates, project budgets, and product improvements. 
• Organize design reviews, project meetings, training sessions, and other activities related to the design process 
• Oversee the creation and maintenance of product documentation. 
• Prepare engineering documentation such as part and assembly drawings, specifications, technical reports, test plans 
• Organize project documentation such as schedules, budgets, cost/benefit analyses, presentations 
• Interface with suppliers and fabricators to discuss technical issues 
• Interpret technical data for all levels of technical understanding 
• Develop plans, schedules and budgets for independent and small group projects 
• Manage the design and development of new products. 
• Work with external consultants and internal resources to complete designs on time and within budget while meeting production cost targets. 
• Support the transition of the product from design to manufacturing. 

Education, Experience, and Qualifications 

• BS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field 
• 7-12 years experience in mechanical engineering design or product design 
• Ability to distill technical information for all levels of technical understanding in order to communicate strategy and priorities 
• Ability to manage groups, setting priorities, assigning work, reviewing progress, providing critical reviews, and resolving problems 
• Strong mechanical design aptitude 
• Hands-on prototyping capability 
• Demonstrated ability to develop creative and innovative design solutions 
• CAD skills, SolidWorks preferred 
• Excellent written and verbal skills 
• Machine shop or construction experience preferred 
• Self motivated, with ability to work both independently and with multiple teams
