Director or Associate Director of California Wolf Recovery

Position Location: San Francisco Bay Area

General position overview:

The California Wolf Center, a leader in gray wolf conservation in the western states, is seeking applicants for the position of Director (or Associate Director depending on level of experience) of California Wolf Recovery. The successful applicant will be an experienced, entrepreneurial and self-motivated professional who can help fulfill our mission in Northern California to pave the way for wolves returning to California. This position will include some travel and the ability to work remotely.

The California Wolf Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation and education organization dedicated to the recovery of wolves in the wildlands they once roamed. We envision a landscape where wolves thrive in healthy ecosystems and wolves and people successfully coexist.

 

Primary and immediate duties:

 

•    Sit on Wolf Stakeholders Committee; participate in relevant working groups and sub- committees.  Prepare reports relative to same for Board and Board member coordinating N Cal activities (P Valentino currently)

•    Identify and create opportunities to raise the profile of the California Wolf Center as an expert resource on wolf recovery.  Activities will include, without limitation: working with wildlife agencies, creating educational materials, presenting to a variety of audiences, speaking engagements, partnering with other organizations, building coalitions and bringing in outside experts where need exists.

•   Develop opportunities for and conduct public education about wolves to audiences in the

Bay area, Sacramento area, and surrounding urban areas; develop educational programs for recovery area audiences.

•    Build on existing relationships and establish additional relationships with stakeholders, including the agricultural community, hunting community, conservation community, and state and federal agency staff.

•    Keep abreast of wolf conservation actions and news as it relates to the return of wolves to California and make determinations on how best to use that news for our mission. Know everything about wolves and related wildlife issues in the western states and elsewhere.

•    Create and assist in development opportunities. Assist in preparation of written content for member appeals, action alerts, web and social media.

•   Prepare press releases and assist or draft op-ed related pieces.

•   Manage the organization’s social media presence, assisted by other staff

 

Duties will likely also include (depending on level of specific experience and knowledge of pacific states wolf recovery):

 

•    Represent California Wolf Center in wolf stakeholder wolf conservation and management planning meetings being conducted by California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

•    Represent California Wolf Center in a coalition of environmental groups focused on recovering wolves in the Pacific West.

•   Serve as Legislative Liaison, attending appropriate hearings at CA Fish and Wildlife

Commission and State Legislature.

•    Assist representation of the California Wolf Center in media interviews and generating media attention.

•   Ability to work on some weekends and evenings (e.g. for educational events)

 

 

 

Essential qualities (you must demonstrate the following):

 

•    Educational background/training/experience in human-wildlife conflict and conflict resolution.

•    Educational background/training/experience with large carnivore biology and/or natural history.

•   Educational background/training/experience with wildlife conservation policy.

•   Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

•   Excellent public speaking skills

•   Outgoing, good people skills, good listener.

•    Ability to work independently and take the initiative in designing projects, solving problems, and identifying new opportunities

•    Self-motivated team-player.  Ability to lead and be lead.  Demonstrated experience working effectively with teams (inside and outside the organization) and on your own.

 

The following qualifications and skills are highly desired:

 

•    Demonstrated experience and expertise in western states predator conservation and recovery in the western states

•    Demonstrated speaking and conflict resolution skills with a variety of stakeholder audiences. (For example: can you speak about wolves to a group of not-so-excited stakeholders including ranchers, hunters, locals against wolves?)

•    Strong familiarity and experience with California, Washington state or Oregon Wolf recovery

 

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
