Job Title: Director, Online Fundraising

Reports To: Director, Digital Engagement

Department: Office of Advancement

Supervises: Business Partnerships Marketing Coordinator

Job Description: The Director, Online Fundraising is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive online fundraising strategy including internal and external promotion, content creation, design development and implementation, and on-line partnership building. Reporting to the Director, Digital Engagement and working closely with Digital Strategies, Communications, Advancement and Sierra Club’s online fundraising consultants, this individual will oversee and execute new and existing marketing and fundraising efforts being carried out online. Working to integrate execution and analysis of Club direct mail and phone channels with online fundraising programs is critical.

Scope: The Director, Online Fundraising is responsible for planning all national digital fundraising efforts and providing the creative and tactical skills necessary to make the online fundraising program a success. This position will also interact with Conservation, Digital Strategies and the Sierra Club Foundation and will require a team player who can orchestrate ideas from others, organizing multiple viewpoints and priorities into cohesive direction. The Director will also oversee the technical aspects of monitoring, managing, and controlling the day-to-day operations of the online fundraising program and the systems that support it, as well as monitoring analytics and performance of online programs.

Job Activities:

  1. Develops the annual plan and budget for online fundraising in conjunction with the Director, Digital Engagement and Director, Membership and Direct Marketing.
  2. Manages, designs, and implements the online fundraising programs, which includes: launching new campaigns and fundraising opportunities; overseeing and developing creative; developing testing strategies; monitoring vendor results and operational processes; coordinating production and managing schedules; credit card fulfillment; and reporting on program and testing results.
  3. Utilizes Web and email analytics to measure the effectiveness of all online fundraising programs and makes recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the efforts.
  4. Works interactively with Sierra Club’s online fundraising agency to develop and test campaigns and tactics to optimize online fundraising programs.
  5. Leads integration efforts with other Advancement colleagues who are responsible for offline programs including new donor acquisition, monthly donor program, fund appeals, renewals, reinstates and peer-to-peer programs with the goal of maximizing donor value through multi-channel fundraising efforts. Responsible for optimizing results of online renewals program.
  6. Supports and facilitates all online fundraising and cultivation emails for planned giving, Summit Circle, and other major giving donor programs.
  7. Oversees Sierra Club’s “Sponsor a Wild Place” fundraising program. Includes development of the Wild Places site, new products, email and Web campaign strategy and program reporting.
  8. In conjunction with the Director of Strategic Relations, Oversees Sierra Club’s revenue generating partnership marketing efforts including Solar Homes, vehicle donations, and various consumer offers.
  9. Supervises optimization of Sierra Club’s monthly donor program online.
  10. Coordinates efforts with other departments and chapters to fully engage Sierra Club audiences such as members, e-newsletter subscribers, online activists, Outings participants, event participants, social media participants and volunteers.
  11. Provide best practices guidance and training to chapters in conjunction with the Associate Director of Chapter Fundraising.
  12. Responsible for managing relationship between Digital Strategies and Membership/Direct Marketing to ensure ‘back-end’ fundraising (fundraising integrated into online advocacy) budget goals are met.
  13. Manages day-to-day interactions with acquisition/promotional partners (e.g. Care2), including contracts, data suppressions, and results.
  14. Manages assigned list building and online advertising initiatives.
  15. In conjunction with the Digital Strategies team, coordinates online fundraising calendar and works to manage overall e-mail volume.
  16. Troubleshoots site and email problems and opportunities with Communications/Digital Strategies team as well as Convio and other external vendors to resolve issues rapidly and effectively.
  17. Oversees the e-mail append program for the Club, ensuring email appends are done on schedule and optimizing performance of appends.
  18. Supervises staff, assigns work and establishes priorities, provides guidance and direction, monitors performance, conducts performance evaluations and provides ongoing feedback, effectively recommends hiring, firing, salary and promotion decisions and provides training and development.
  19. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Seasonal Activities

Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines, staff absences and vacancies, and during peak activity periods. Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be required.

Knowledge & Skills: 

-- Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of professional work experience developing and implementing online fundraising programs in a large, non-profit setting.

-- Demonstrated track record of successful online fundraising in an environment of similar complexity.

-- Strong analytical skills and the ability to make data driven decisions that lead to innovative approaches for developing online fundraising programs.

-- Experience collaborating with others in a complex, dynamic organizational environment. Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships.

-- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively, with excellent listening skills.

-- Self-starter with an entrepreneurial and creative approach to problem-solving, and the ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities and trends.

-- Individual with high energy level, self-confidence and a positive “can-do” attitude are essential.

-- Hands-on approach to online program management and execution.

-- Excellent project management skills. Ability to manage numerous concurrent and developing projects.

-- Strong tech skills and experience that ideally include an understanding of: large-scale database management; nonprofit constituency relationship management systems (i.e. Convio); and web-application development processes.

-- Experience working with Google Adwords, Google Keywords and Google Analytics.

-- Experience with commercial consumer marketing a plus.
