The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), one of the nation’s most influential environmental organizations, and its 501(c)(4) affiliate, the NRDC Action Fund, are seeking an experienced leader and manager with government, advocacy and campaign expertise to serve as the Director of the Center for Policy Advocacy (CPA). This senior level position, which reports to the Chief Operating Officer, will oversee a government affairs division, an advocacy division, and several affiliate organizations, including the NRDC Action Fund. The Director of CPA, working closely with policy, legislative and communications experts across the organization, will determine and direct government affairs strategy for NRDC.

 

NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization with 2.4 million members and online activists. With offices in New York, Washington, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Montana and Beijing, our staff of over 500 lawyers, scientists, policy analysts, advocacy and communications experts works to protect the environment and public health through research, advocacy and litigation.

Responsibilities:

The Director of the Center for Policy Advocacy will provide a strong vision to build enduring power and leverage impact that advances NRDC’s diverse institutional advocacy priorities, values and influence. The Director will serve as lead government affairs strategist for the institution, advising NRDC leadership.

 

The Director will manage a team of people and assure the integration of activities across NRDC government affairs, campaigns, state/regional government advocacy, and NRDC special partnership projects including Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) and Voces Verdes. The Director also will oversee the NRDC Action Fund, NRDC’s 501(c) (4) affiliate organization.

 

The role of the Director will require close coordination across NRDC’s programs and departments and the ability to synthesize staff input while moving quickly to make high-level decisions on NRDC strategy and direction. In addition, the Director will be an external leader for NRDC, ensuring that NRDC has a leadership role with our partner groups and that staff maintain important relationships with key players in Congress and in the presidential administration, as well as in states most relevant for our work.

 

The Director will manage fundraising relationships and support networks for the work of the Center for Policy Advocacy and for the work of the NRDC Action Fund in conjunction with NRDC's development department.

 

The ideal candidate will be an excellent strategist with extensive knowledge of the federal government workings, an understanding of and experience in state government affairs work, and an appreciation of local and regional influences and opportunities. The candidate should have the ability to coordinate among diverse partners, understand how advocacy campaigns function and have a good understanding of environmental policy and politics at the federal, state and local levels. The candidate should have a proven track record with management of teams as well as management coordination across an organization. Candidates also must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, have a respect for a diversity of opinions and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment. The candidate should have exceptional written and oral communication skills, natural leadership abilities, and strong analytical skills.
