Job Description

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a global non-profit environmental organization with more than 1.3 million members and online activists.  We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Livingston, Montana and Beijing, China. Our staff of more than 400 includes lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts working to protect the environment and public health.

Science is fundamental to NRDC’s work, defining and articulating the evidence-based rationale for our legal, policy and advocacy activities.  In 2005, NRDC established the Science Center to enhance NRDC’s scientific capacity, credibility and visibility, and to advance our work across a range of priority issues, from cutting global warming pollution to protecting endangered species. The Science Center provides scientific resources to NRDC and its staff scientists, and brings additional scientific expertise to the organization by supporting an in-house team of post-doctoral fellows and collaboration with scientists at universities and other research institutions.

Position Summary:

The Director of Science Communications will work with the NRDC Science Center and Communications Department to increase the quality, quantity, diversity and effectiveness of NRDC’s science communications in a wide range of media. Responsibilities will include the creation and marketing of science communication products, working with NRDC scientists to improve the quality and effectiveness of their communications, and working with the Science Center and Communications Department to ensure alignment of NRDC communications with its science and policy positions. This position is based in San Francisco but, depending on the candidate, could also be based in NRDC’s other domestic offices in New York, Washington, Santa Monica or Chicago.

Essential Functions:

The Director of Science Communications position will require a combination of editorial, marketing and communications excellence with an understanding of the science behind NRDC’s policy and advocacy work. The Director of Science Communications will be responsible for:

  • Working directly with the Science Center and other NRDC scientists, to develop and produce science communication products in diverse media formats, collaborate with scientist authors, and edit science-related communications to make them accessible for a wide variety of public audiences.
  • Serving as a spokesperson to the media on NRDC’s science-based work.
  • Providing communications training for NRDC science fellows and staff scientists in order help them improve their skills and produce their own communications products (including blogs, magazine articles, short videos, telesalons, etc.).
  • Developing and regularly updating content for a “Science” page on the NRDC website.
  • Working with the NRDC Films team to produce video communications and up to one science film per year, and providing support for related promotion and outreach. Video production experience is a strong plus.
  • Coordinating a regular science-dedicated column for NRDC’s OnEarth.org website.
  • Assisting in the creation of a science writers fund to support investigative reporting on key science issues with broad appeal and dissemination via print and web-based media.
  • Identifying and developing opportunities to engage and collaborate with existing science-focused media outlets, such as Science Friday, to enhance public awareness of NRDC’s science-based work.
