Director of Public Policy - Western Region

 

Ducks Unlimited’s (DU) Western Region is seeking an accomplished and driven individual to lead public policy efforts across our nine-state region. Water policy and related issues in California are priorities for this position. The director will serve as a member of the regional Conservation management team and provide strategic thinking and targeted implementation to help achieve national, regional and state policy objectives.  The director will also advise the Ducks Unlimited Public Policy Team on all public policy priorities.  The director also will provide leadership to help guide the collective policy work of various stakeholders (e.g., DU volunteers, agencies, conservation organizations) across the Western Region.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide leadership for and increase effectiveness of DU’s public policy efforts across the Western Region (WR) with special emphasis on policy matters impacting waterfowl and their habitats in California.
  • Work directly with key legislative and executive branch leaders.
  • Collaborate with volunteers and staff to develop key policy objectives, seek organizational approval and develop strategies and tactics for success.
  • Advise DU’s national public policy steering committee on federal policies that affect DU’s continental mission and keep them abreast of regional and state policy issues.
  • Support DU’s federal policy priorities, including coordination with DU’s Government Affairs Office in D.C., coordinate fly-ins and federal policy testimony, and build relationships with the federal delegations in each of the Western Region’s nine states.
  • Coordinate policy development and implementation with other conservation organizations and agencies; and build creative and enduring partnerships to support DU’s policy efforts.
  • Incorporate social, economic and biological information into policy strategy development.
  • Raise the profile and visibility of Ducks Unlimited as a leader in conservation policy efforts throughout the Western Region.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • A minimum of a BS in public policy, wildlife management or another appropriate field.  An advanced degree is preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience in public policy development and execution.
  • Experience in polling, strategic messaging and coalition building.
  • Experience in crafting legislation and leading bi-partisan advocacy efforts with broad stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively approach conservation policy development.
  • Understanding of campaign organization and execution.
  • Understanding of not-for-profit fundraising efforts.
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate complex public policy matters verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with both internal and external stakeholders to develop, plan and implement strategies related to Ducks Unlimited’s public policy and government affairs interests and efforts.

 

This position reports to the Director of Operations for the Western Region.  The director of public policy must work out of the Western Regional Office located in Rancho Cordova, California.
