Description

SONATI is a non-profit Nicaraguan environmental education organization dedicated to promote knowledge, love and care for the environment through widespread free environmental education programs for thousands of local school children.

SONATI works in a self-sustainable manner, using its non-profit environmental hostels & tours to finance its environmental programs.

SONATI is a creative & active organization, promoting new programs and continuously expanding its activities in space and content. While the new director is expected to oversee the already established programs, her/his primary focus will be to actively promote new initiatives and expand SONATI´s activities into new sites in Nicaragua.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all SONATI programs and activities, including environmental programs and the hostels and tours that fund these programs.
  • Expand SONATI activities to new sites in Nicaragua.
  • Develop new environmental education activities and programs.
  • Develop new nature conservation initiatives and nature reserves, in tandem with local communities. 
  • Represent SONATI in collaborative relationships with other organizations.
  • Oversee training for new guides, for both environmental education and trekking, especially in new sites.
  • Fundraising.
  • Work with a board of directors in shaping and implementing the organization´s strategies, policies, and initiatives. 

Qualifications:

  • Entrepreneurial, idealistic, charismatic, and self-directed professional.
  • Ability to work creatively with limited human and financial resources.
  • Very organized and detail-oriented.
  • Excellent team-work, interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Wide environmental knowledge, preferably familiar with Nicaraguan nature and its environmental problems.
  • Experience in planning and implementing environmental education programs.
  • Experience in training nature guides, for both outdoor and indoor activities.
  • Fundraising experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (Spanish and English).
  • Must demonstrate accountability, a positive attitude and initiative.

Salary: All salaries at SONATI are modest local salaries, but for foreigners are practically volunteer wages. A candidate can expect to comfortably cover her/his living expenses, but should not expect to save much money out of this salary. Actual salary is $300/ month, but should go up to $500/ month while having the funds to establish the next SONATI site.

Free accommodation is available.

A minimum commitment of two years is required.
