WWF has launched a bold new strategy focussing on six major goals - water, wildlife, the ocean, climate and energy, forests, and food – and key drivers of environmental problems – markets, finance and governance. To support our new strategy, we are recruiting a Director of Philanthropy for our International Secretariat. This critical role leads the overall growth strategy for WWF International to support the organisation’s 2030 conservation agenda. The function connects closely with the global fundraising community and supports the network-wide resource mobilisation strategy.

The Role:

The Director of Philanthropy will work closely with key teams across Fundraising, Conservation, Partnerships and with Senior Management to develop and deliver an ambitious plan to grow income from high net worth individuals and foundations. This will include:

  • In conjunction with Philanthropy and Fundraising teams, developing and driving an ambitious business development strategy to drive growth in unrestricted, flexible and programme funding for WWF International in its agreed markets and for our new conservation strategy around global goals and practices
  • Full accountability for achieving ambitious organisational revenue targets for philanthropy
  • Personally securing high level gifts from a growing portfolio of prospects and donors
  • Developing and leading a team of results-oriented philanthropy experts to perform at the highest standards to increase the portfolio of supporters and grow the value of support from existing donors. Ensure team success through mentoring, coaching and accountability.
  • Collaborating with Philanthropy Services to identify, evaluate, research and cultivate highest-potential prospects and to ensure high quality content and products for donor acquisition and stewardship
  • Building collaboration with the WWF fundraising community of practice, especially philanthropy experts and advisors, to support ambitious WWF resource mobilisation efforts
  • Developing and leading a strategy to enhance support from major global donors, in conjunction with WWF offices and senior management, to ensure cross-border collaboration in philanthropy is maximised
  • Developing and monitoring annual and longer term income budgets, forecasts and projections and managing agreed expenditure budget, in conjunction with the Head of Philanthropy Services and Global Fundraising director
  • Deputising for the Global Fundraising Director as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum undergraduate university degree
  • Minimum ten years' experience in high level philanthropy or partnership development
  • Experience of working with high level volunteers and/or committees to support philanthropy
  • Excellent and proven knowledge of philanthropy methodology including prospect research, proposal preparation and the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of high level relationships
  • Proven track record of personally securing and cultivating major gifts in excess of $ 500,000 USD
  • At least seven years’ people management experience ideally in an international context.


  • Experience of developing and/or implementing a successful major gift or capital campaign would be an advantage

Skills and Competencies:


  • Superior interpersonal and communications skills, particularly with high-level individuals in a multinational environment
  • Excellent knowledge of business modelling and revenue planning, including long-term projections, income target setting and monitoring
  • Flexibility and diplomacy, adaptive style
  • Experience working in an international context and with people from different backgrounds, styles and cultures
  • Autonomous, proactive and results-focused
  • Positive and ambitious, able to find solutions independently and creatively
  • Excellent people management skills and proven ability to lead a diverse team to achieve excellence and results
  • Fluency in written and oral English; fluency in written and oral French is a distinct advantage
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally. Working outside normal hours of business will occasionally be required

  • Knowledge of the Swiss fundraising network of high net worth individuals
  • Fluency in written and oral German
