ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Director of Philanthropy has the opportunity to build upon and grow the Chapter’s fundraising portfolio by working closely with the State Director and Philanthropy colleagues in the region, and in particular the Pennsylvania Chapter, to determine effective strategies for identified donors and prospects.   The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of a comprehensive philanthropy program that secures significant financial resources (annual private fundraising goal of $1,000,000) from current and prospective Delaware donors to support state-based, Mid-Atlantic and global conservation priorities.  S/he will develop and implement a multi-year, philanthropic vision and plan for Delaware that aligns with TNC’s fundraising approach and utilizes the resources and support provided by a multi-tiered, complex global organization.  Partnering with the State Director, s/he will facilitate the largest possible gifts for TNC’s conservation priorities by helping donors articulate their passion for conservation.

The Director of Philanthropy will work on a variety of activities which may include providing program information to prospects, drafting correspondence and acknowledgments, using the fundraising management system (FMS) to update donor information, producing reports, performing analysis, tracking and cultivating donors.  S/he will manage donors with a capability of $100,000 over three years; with a fundraising target of $1 million.  S/he reports to the State Director and serves as an active member of the Chapter’s Management Team, working collaboratively to establish fundraising goals, provide fundraising perspective to long-term strategic planning and fiscal management, and ensure integration of priorities within the Philanthropy program.  S/he will receive strategic, operational and system support from the Pennsylvania Chapter and will be welcomed as a member of the philanthropy team.

The Director of Philanthropy has broad financial responsibility in setting and meeting fundraising objectives, tracking gifts, interpreting financial reports, and developing a budget.  S/he understands and complies with all TNC gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.This position provides a terrific opportunity for a fundraising professional with an appreciation for TNC’s mission and a demonstrated interest in nature and/or the out-of-doors.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field and at least 5 years’ fundraising or closely related work experience.
  • Experience developing and executing philanthropy strategies.
  • Experience in asking for and closing five-and six-figure gifts.
  • Experience working with current and evolving trends in charitable giving, including the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as individual donors, foundation advisors, and corporations.
  • Experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following attributes would enhance a candidate’s potential for success:

  • A background in marketing, communications or business.
  • A passion for nature, wildlife and the outdoors.  A demonstrable commitment to conservation will be a distinct advantage.
  • The capacity to embrace and effectively communicate the Conservancy’s mission and its relevance to the environment, the economy and the health of human communities.
  • Knowledge of and experience working in Delaware’s philanthropic communities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to easily connect with others and to effectively collaborate.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and effectively supporting natural partners from within and outside of the organization.
  • Management experience including the ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and actively utilize peer networks.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
