Position: Director of Philanthropy
Location: Santa Cruz, CA Full Time, Exempt About the Organization Island Conservation (IC), a global leader in the conservation of threatened island biodiversity, prevents extinctions by removing invasive species from islands. In collaboration with local, regional, national and international partners, IC designs and implements conservation projects which ensure native species protection and demonstrate cutting-edge invasive species removal techniques. IC also supports on-the-ground research to optimize the success of invasive species removal. Our mission is focused and our conservation outcomes are tangible and measureable. Since our founding in 1994, we have deployed teams to 52 islands worldwide to protect 977 populations of 389 species. IC’s species protection projects are located in four geographic regions: the Caribbean, North America, South America, and the Southwest Pacific. IC is headquartered in Santa Cruz, California with satellite offices located in Honolulu, Hawai’i; Washington, DC; Kelowna, British Columbia; Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico; Auckland, New Zealand; Sydney, Australia; Santiago, Chile; and Galápagos, Ecuador. For more information, please visit www.islandconservation.org. Description Island Conservation is seeking a highly creative, self-motivated and articulate Director of Philanthropy (DoP). In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Board of Directors (Board), and other senior staff, the DoP will manage all aspects of IC’s fundraising plans, portfolios, programs, campaigns, and Philanthropy department staff. The DoP’s duties will include the cultivation and solicitation of major donors; corporate, foundation and government grants; and frequent interaction with board members, donors, programmatic staff, and other funding partners in the development of effective fundraising strategies. The DoP will directly supervise a staff of four philanthropy team members. The DoP will report to the CEO. Primary Duties and Responsibilities <http://www.islandconservation.org/> Develop and implement the organization’s philanthropic strategies and tactics to advance IC’s 2020 strategic vision, plan, and programmatic objectives. Work directly with staff and the Board, using a donor-based, Moves Management approach, for the ongoing identification, cultivation and stewardship of major donors and cultivation of new prospects. Develop and manage a personal portfolio of at least 40 major donors and prospects, primarily within the five to six figure annual support range. Oversee the stewardship of new and existing major donors, government partners, and philanthropic supporters, ensuring that they are engaged, appreciated, recognized and valued, resulting in increased philanthropic support and enthusiasm for IC. Support the Board of Directors’ Development Committee through close collaboration with the committee chair and the Director of Board Engagement; work with the Development Committee to establish and track progress toward fundraising goals, strategies, and tactics. Serve as an articulate, enthusiastic, and visible spokesperson for the organization to effectively communicate IC’s major fundraising goals, create a strong institutional culture of philanthropy, and establish donor networks through various venues and within a wide-range of philanthropic audiences. Motivate, manage, train and lead the philanthropy staff to promote professional accomplishments and career enhancement. Provide fundraising training to programmatic staff and the Board as appropriate. Plan, oversee and report on the Philanthropy budget. Manage and maintain all fundraising systems. Serve as a member of the senior leadership team. 8+ years of directly related professional fundraising management experience Demonstrated success in building long-term relationships with donors and confidence in asking people to contribute time and financial support Demonstrated success in creating, managing and implementing a comprehensive major gifts program in the five, six, and seven-figure range, supported by excellent donor stewardship Close ties to the major donors in the San Francisco Bay Area, the West Coast, and other major donor markets Experience identifying and administering government grants and contracts Articulate, professional, and poised with strong verbal presentation skills Familiarity with, and utilization of, donor-centered philanthropy and a Moves Management approach Excellent research and writing skills (i.e., ability to write donor letters, major gift proposals, project updates, donor correspondence, etc.); document formatting, record keeping and archiving Specific knowledge of PC-based computers with expertise in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Demonstrated proficiency with donor management databases (Salesforce highly preferred) Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends Domestic and international travel may be required Comfortable working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and geographic locations A deep commitment to biodiversity conservation and the mission of Island Conservation A personable, flexible, diplomatic, and respectful demeanor Foreign language fluency and competency, particularly in Spanish and/or French, is a major plus Compensation and Location Island Conservation offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience To Apply To be considered for this position, interested candidates must submit a cover letter and CV to: Jobs@islandconservation.org This position will remain open until filled.
