Primary Responsibilities:
- Work with staff and leadership volunteers, nationally and regionally, to develop short and long-term fund raising strategies, objectives and priorities for SCA’s annual giving program, its major gift (Campaign) goals, and other special projects
- Oversee all major gift fundraising activities, assuring collaboration with staff and volunteer leadership and in accordance with national and regional priorities and program objectives
- Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of major gifts, including: determining ongoing relationships with prospect/donor; recommending specific purpose and level of gift; identifying those to be involved in cultivation including volunteer leadership, and subsequent solicitation; assuring that solicitations are carried out
- Work closely with the Director of Gift Planning assuring that regional gift officers are knowledgeable and able to identify/participate in planned gift opportunities
- Lead the development and monitoring of major gift revenue and corresponding expense budget
- Develop and manage a portfolio of approximately 25 leadership donors and prospects
- Direct the cultivation, relationship management and upgrading of annual gifts of board of directors and campaign cabinet members
- Assure the identification and establishment of relationships (directly or through volunteer or other staff) with leadership donors and prospects for cultivation, education and solicitation purposes to maximize fund raising in support of SCA’s national and regional strategies
- Direct process documentation and improvement, progress tracking and reporting on all leadership donor strategy development plans, contacts and results on a timely basis utilizing national development department tools and standards
- Assure cohesive collaboration between Regional Gift Officers, Regional Vice Presidents and national foundation relations team to leverage and strengthen funding strategies at the national and regional levels
- Co-ordinate an effective program for recognition, involvement and stewardship of major and special gifts donors in coordination with the Director of Annual Giving
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of direct major gift and/or related experience required. Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Ability to understand the needs and interests of major donors in order to develop relationships between them and SCA
- Ability to articulate the case for support so that individuals “buy into” SCA’s vision/mission/goals and understand with sufficient effectiveness to secure major gifts and pledges
- Familiarity/knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates
- Successful track record in major gift and/or related solicitation experience required
- Excellent verbal and written presentation skills necessary
- Exceptional interpersonal skills a must
- Knowledge of or ability to learn Raisers Edge Software (or comparable fundraising software) and other business-related presentation software required
- Secure knowledge of MSOffice required
- Experience in a non-profit environment highly preferred
- Ability to work in a team environment with national and regional staff necessary
- Willingness to travel extensively (40-50%) within the region and nationally on occasion
- Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
- Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
In addition to these general skills, the position requires the ability to lead and/or participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
- Initiate contacts with potential major donors;
- Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers
- Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure;
- Make solicitations when appropriate;
- Maintain stewardship contacts with donors
