Founded in 1977 during the oil crisis, the Alliance to Save Energy is a non-profit coalition of business, government, environmental and consumer leaders that promotes energy efficiency worldwide to achieve a healthier economy, a cleaner environment, and greater energy security.

The Alliance’s Policy and Research Team is seeking a Director of Government Relations to serve as the primary lobbyist for the Alliance before the Congress and the federal government.  In addition, the position may also include advocacy before certain state legislatures and/or regulatory bodies.  The Director will be an integral member in the Policy team that works with the Board of Directors to develop Alliance policies and priorities at the federal, state and local levels, as well as being the principal representative of the Alliance before these groups. The Director of Government Relations will report to the Sr. Vice President of Policy and Research. 

The position is located in Washington, DC.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain and build relationships with Members of Congress and congressional staff; state legislatures, government agencies, environmental organizations, consumer groups, businesses and other energy policy stakeholders.  
  • Inform Alliance staff about perspectives of various stakeholders and work collaboratively with Alliance senior management and the policy team to develop and prioritize the Alliance’s policy agenda.  
  • Work with senior management and the policy team to develop strategies for implementing the Alliance’s policy agenda.
  • Direct and manage the implementation of the Alliance’s policy agenda(s).
  • Work with the Alliance communications team on relevant press releases, news stories, articles, etc. and, as required, serve as an Alliance spokesperson before the media.
  • Report to senior management and the Alliance Board as necessary. 

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, government relations, public policy, international relations or related field and 7-10 years related senior-level experience. Master's in Political Science or Policy and/or Law Degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated, strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build coalitions/work collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Working knowledge of federal lobbying laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of energy, environment and/or climate change issues at the federal and/or multi-state level is highly desirable.

Preferred Experience or Skills

  • Previous experience with communications and outreach to policymakers.
  • Previous experience as Congressional staff.
  • Previous experience with public speaking.
  • Previous experience reading and summarizing legislation and scientific reports.
