Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for Marine Technical & Scientific Advice & Services, Research, Technology, Development and Innovation. The Institute provides government, public agencies and the maritime industry with a range of scientific, advisory and economic development services that inform policy-making, regulation and the sustainable management and growth of Irelands’ marine resources. The Institute also undertakes, coordinates and promotes marine research and development, which is essential to achieving a sustainable ocean economy, protecting ecosystems and inspiring a shared understanding of the ocean.

The Institute works closely with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, Semi-State Agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Roles:

We are seeking to appoint two innovative and collaborative Marine Leaders into the roles of (1) Director of Fisheries & Ecosystem Advisory Services and (2) Director of Marine Environment & Food Safety Services.

The Directors will lead experienced teams - some remotely in the current COVID-19 climate - in delivery of advice and support to key stakeholders, including government departments and national agencies. The areas for service delivery include Fisheries Science Advice, Ecosystem Understanding, Aquaculture, Marine Environment, Fish & Shellfish Safety and Health Services, licensing and policy advice, quality standards and applied Marine Research. The Directors will also work as part of cross services matrix teams to support the integration of our services to meet emerging government policy areas outlined in the programme for government – including Sustainable Fisheries, Marine Spatial Planning, Environmental Monitoring, Ocean Carbon and Climate Mitigation.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

To be considered for these pivotal roles; you will have demonstrated experience in the proactive management of science programmes, people and resources at a senior and strategic level with the ability to balance operational outputs while directing at a senior level. Successful candidates will be resilient and highly motivated; clearly meeting all of the relevant experience and scientific qualifications, detailed in the job specifications. This will include a primary degree complemented by at least seven years of relevant post qualification work experience.

Duration of Contract:

The roles are full time and comes with a Specified Purpose Contract of employment for up to five years at which time the role will become permanent and a Contract of Indefinite Duration issued – subject to performance in a suitability for the role. You will be on probation for the first 12 months of this contract.
