Description

To address the challenges that our seas face now and in the future, the Marine Conservation Society seeks to promote positive environmental change and gain public support on a wide scale, through compelling communications and influential stakeholder engagement activities.

We have ambitious aims – our vision is to secure seas that are fit for life and we do that by influencing political and social changes that will result in healthy fish stocks and clean seas and beaches.  We work for oceans that provide sustainable life and livelihoods for all those that rely on them, and wonderful, rich habitats and environments for us all to enjoy.

We need an exceptional individual to bring our vision to life for our audiences and we have created the new post of Director of Engagement & Communications to join our Senior Management Team.  This role will lead our communications and volunteer and stakeholder engagement strategies which champion the MCS brand and generate impact through public support and engagement.

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate strong leadership with strategic as well as tactical ability.  You will be confident and resilient – enjoying working with senior stakeholders and developing your team to be great at what they do.  Becoming part of our passionate and dedicated team, you will have the opportunity to make your mark as we continue to develop the organisation to meet our core objectives.

Along with taking a leadership role in the strategic development of MCS as a whole, your role as Director of Engagement & Communications is responsible for:

  • The strategic development of MCS’ profile and public awareness through effective stakeholder engagement and high-quality tailored external communications
  • Raising the profile of our conservation goals and increasing membership and local fundraising activities through a network of volunteers throughout the UK
  • Delivering volunteer survey programmes that maximise the value of the science generated and ensuring this is communicated and integrated into MCS programmes and campaigns
    • Developing and establishing public affairs and engagement strategies in relation to key stakeholders, celebrities and patrons

Key Skills:

  • Currently working at a senior level, with proven ability to motivate and influence others, lead organisation-wide change and delegate effectively to deliver outcomes
    • Extensive experience of media handling in a professional organisation and a proven track record of engaging communities, including those that are harder to reach.
    • Experience of developing impactful communications strategies and extensive knowledge of a wide variety of media channels, including digital (social) media
      • A track record that evidences the effective development and use of innovative engagement and communications strategies that motivate action in support of a campaign
      • Evidence of project management skills, showing how you are successfully able to plan, monitor and deliver results within challenging deadlines and limited budgets
      • Demonstrable interpersonal and networking skills and ability to build long-term relationships with key stakeholders

The Marine Conservation Society has been the voice for our seas for over 30 years; championing sustainable fisheries, clean seas and beaches and protection for marine wildlife.  This is a very exciting time for the right candidate to join us, so to learn more about our important work visit our website at www.mcsuk.org
