Job Title: Director of Development

Position reports to: President, Friends of the Earth

Position Location: Washington, DC

Basic Function

Friends of the Earth-United States is a progressive environmental advocacy organization seeking an energetic team member to lead all aspects of development.  The candidate will work closely with the President to secure and expand the organization’s $4.5 million budget.   The development director will oversee the positions of Foundations Director, Donor Services Manager and Development Associate.

Responsibilities

This is a full-time exempt position based in Washington, D.C. that reports to the President of Friends of the Earth.

Development Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive and strategic fundraising plan in collaboration with the President, Managing Director and the Board of Directors;
  • Work with Friends of the Earth’s President to build partnerships with foundations and individual donors;
  • Collaborate with the President on board development and cultivating new board members;
  • Ensure that mail and grant fundraising for the organization is efficient, professional and successful;
  • Plan, manage and implement special events, donor events and other cultivation/stewardship activities with program staff;
  • Ensure that all donor stewardship is a priority throughout the organization;
  • Work with Managing Director to provide reports about the fundraising progress to the Board of Directors. Develop and maintain close working relationships with the philanthropic community, individual donors, and board members;
  • Serve as a visible spokesperson and advocate for Friends of the Earth and programs in the funding community.

Management and Other Responsibilities:

  • Manage a development team composed of three full-time employees;
  • Develop and manage departmental budget and work plans;
  • Serve as a member of the Friends of the Earth Management Team;
  • Play a leadership role in strategic planning activities;
  • Coordinate with our communications and online team to ensure integration of our direct marketing operations;
  • Complete other duties as necessary.

Experience

  • Minimum of eight years experience in the development field is required;
  • Board development experience;
  • Experience building and growing major donor programs;
  • Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organizational, oral communication, and written communication skills;
  • Proven success in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of grants and donations from foundations and individuals;
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree/certificate in non-profit management preferred.
  • Experience in managing people and budgets;
  • Knowledge of the Raiser’s Edge database is preferred.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. Salary and benefits for this position is competitive for similarly sized nonprofits.
