Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Director of Development Operations provides leadership in the areas of Development systems for gifts administration, financial management, and donor relations and engagement to support achievement of fundraising goals of the department. S/he proactively identifies essential business processes to meet requirements of the Development program. S/he also performs special management projects, as assigned by the Vice President for Development, requiring advanced skills and specialized knowledge.

The incumbent plays a leadership role in developing the department’s strategic technology plans, ensuring that systems and processes run smoothly and that Development staff have the tools and training they need to do their jobs effectively. This includes ensuring the integrity, security, and cost-effectiveness of the department’s overall technology solutions, and providing advice to the Vice President and Development program directors on system issues, projects, options, and the impacts of decisions.

The Director of Development Operations is responsible for implementing best practices in gift processing and administration, ensuring timely turnaround from gift receipt to acknowledgement.

In the area of Donor Relations and Engagement, the Director oversees a program responsible for strengthening donor engagement, stewardship, research, and enhancing the donor experience as measured by increasing donor retention and value.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Ensure that Development’s operations are efficient, effective, and consistent with best practices.
• Oversee management of the donor database (Blackbaud’s Enterprise CRM).
• Oversee the development and implementation of annual donor engagement and stewardship plans.
• Develop, disseminate, and document policies, procedures, and data solutions that support end-user needs.
• Oversee the integration of internal systems such as the donor database and online database (Convio), and external systems and vendors, such as a lockbox or direct mail service bureau.
• Liaise with Earthjustice’s Information Technology department and external consultants and vendors supporting the constituent database and other systems.
• Establish procedures and training to ensure that gift and biographical data are recorded consistently, accurately, and in accordance with Federal and State laws and best practices.
• In consultation with the VP, develop and manage the Development Operations budget, and coordinate the compilation of the department’s operating budget.
• Oversee hiring, promotions, training, and evaluation of staff in the department.
• As assigned by the Vice President for Development, serve as the project manager for a variety of departmental initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Supervises Development Database Manager, Donor Relations and Engagement Manager, and Supervisor, Gifts & Data Processing.
• Serves as departmental liaison to IT, Finance, vendors, and consultants

Minimum Requirements:

• A minimum of 5 years management experience in a Development department, preferably for a national nonprofit.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of fundraising, gift processing and administration.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Development Operations, fundraising, and donor stewardship.
• Experience using Microsoft Office products and complex management software (e.g. Raiser’s Edge or Blackbaud CRM).
• Experience evaluating complex issues, determining appropriate solutions, costs, and required resources, reaching agreement on a course of action, and providing leadership in implementing the chosen approach.
• Demonstrated understanding of information systems used to collect, disseminate, and report data in support of the Development efforts of a complex nonprofit.
• Experience developing and managing a departmental budget.
• Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication, including the ability to communicate technical subjects to non-technical audiences.
• A strong customer service ethic.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and political astuteness.
• Ability to use discretion, exercise good judgment, tact, diplomacy and maintain strict confidentiality.
• Ability to work with diverse populations at all levels internal and external to the department.
• Ability to plan and implement multiple projects simultaneously and set priorities under the pressure of deadlines and multiple demands

Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree and/or additional training in non-profit administration
• Experience streamlining and documenting business processes and policies.
• Knowledge of advocacy, marketing, and communications.

We are currently located ½ block from the 19th Street BART station in downtown Oakland but we will be moving our headquarters to San Francisco later this year.
