ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Director of Conservation (DOC) oversees all aspects of the Conservation Programs in the Georgia Chapter, encompassing work throughout the state on global, national, regional and state organizational priorities. The DOC works with team members to define and refine priorities for a wide variety of conservation initiatives. The DOC develops key partnerships and serves as a primary contact for conservation issues to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community. The DOC fosters a culture that encourages best practices, training and analyses to implement organizational measures of success. This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Defining conservation priorities; developing and implementing conservation strategies, including the negotiation of complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, local communities and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities;
  • Leading diverse Atlanta and field-based teams towards conservation priorities; managing multiple projects and budgets;
  • Identifying innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks and addressing technical capacity needs;
  • Establishing the Conservancy as a major conservation partner and developing key partnerships to identify and address strategic, scientific, and technical issues; and,
  • Effectively communicating conservation work internally to senior managers to ensure alignment between priorities and resources and externally to diverse audiences to share solutions and best practices and to build financial support for conservation activities.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • BA/BS degree and 10 years of experience in conservation/environmental practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience directing a major program of strategic importance, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions
  • Experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.); experience with high-level conservation contacts
  • Experience with certain aspects of raising funds from public and/or private sources

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10-12 years of experience in conservation/environmental practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent strategic planning skills
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and/or implementing conservation/environmental policy and plans at the state and/or country level
  • A track record of engaging diverse groups including academic communities, nonprofit partners, and governmental institutions in the delivery of conservation/environmental projects and programs
  • Demonstrated leadership and visionary qualities and the ability to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization
  • Demonstrated success as an inspirational manager who has motivated staff to achieve and sustain excellence
  • Successful experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Successful experience identifying and securing public and private funding to support conservation/environmental projects and programs
  • Proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
  • Knowledge of politics and society (culture, socio-economics) with respect to environmental affairs; politically savvy
  • Knowledge of the region’s natural systems (flora, fauna, ecosystems, geography)
  • Knowledge of practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation/environmental purposes
  • Requires valid driver’s license
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills appreciated

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Director of Conservation may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:

  • require occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present occasional possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings

This position may also:

  • require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally
  • require evening and weekend hours
