Description

This position oversees the Chapter’s conservation programs (including science, stewardship and protection) and regional landscape-scale conservation projects. He/she is responsible for the development and implementation of the Chapter’s strategic initiatives, including cross-border and regional collaborations, threat-based and system-based initiatives; and building the necessary business systems that support the chapter’s conservation operations and ultimately assure the building of an enduring institution. He/she is responsible for being one of the primary leaders in partnership with the Executive Director and management team in the chapter for making the Georgia program one of the most effective, well-managed, innovative, and results-oriented programs within The Nature Conservancy.

The Director of Conservation leads conservation science, grant management conservation project management and must cultivate cooperative working partnerships with non-profit organizations, government agencies, universities, corporations and foundations as a means of developing high-leverage public and private sector partnerships and other relationships necessary for conservation success. 

S/He develops and implements short-and long-range conservation objectives and strategic plans for the chapter, its various programs, and individuals. He/she leads and manages a team including stewardship and field office staff working to accomplish these objectives and ensures that the Chapter’s programs have the capacity, skills, and professional growth to effectively protect priority ecoregions and community conservation sites in the state.  The Director of Conservation maintains financial oversight of conservation-related programs and works with the Georgia Director of Operations, the Director of Philanthropy and the Director of Government Relations to develop and implement financial strategies to improve the overall financial health of the Chapter.  Along with the Executive Director and Government Relations Director, the Director of Conservation represents the Chapter in policy, legislative and other public and private forums.  S/He is responsible for managing close relationships with the board of trustees and the Conservation Chair and effectively communicating to this important audience.
