Major Responsibilities:

Plan, direct, and implement internal and external communications, public relations, and media affairs activities for the world’s largest wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization.

Specific duties include:

  • Managing a staff of communications professionals, including media relations and communications specialists working at DU’s national headquarters inMemphisand at five regional offices.
  • Coordinating with Editorial Director, Web Director, and Creative Director on key communications projects and objectives, including integration of media platforms through content coordination and cross-promotion.
  • Ensuring consistency in messaging throughout the organization.
  • Employing a strategic approach to increasing the effectiveness of DU’s communications program and advancing the DU brand among current and potential supporters.
  • Providing communications and public relations expertise and support for DU’s Public Policy Team and key issue-specific work groups.
  • Directing and supervising production and content of a weekly outdoors television show, various printed and electronic newsletters and brochures, an annual report, and other communications tools.
  • Directing all media relations activities, including placing stories in national, regional, and local print and broadcast media, responding to requests for information and interviews, strategic planning, and monitoring and reporting on relevant media activity.
  • Developing and strengthening relationships with key national media, including those devoted to the outdoors and conservation as well as those with a broader focus.
  • Developing, updating, and implementing a national communications plan and a crisis response plan.
  • Conducting media training and crisis response training for DU executives and others who interact with the media.
  • Planning and administering annual department budget.
  • Working with other DU business units to determine their communications needs and goals, and developing plans to help reach those goals.
  • Planning, directing, and participating in any research necessary to understand public opinions about issues important to DU.
  • Creating and distributing national and regional Public Service Announcement campaigns in print and broadcast media to raise awareness about DU and conservation issues.
  • Coordinating all speechwriting and audio/visual elements for the national convention and other meetings.
  • Researching, developing, and evaluating new communications tools and opportunities.
  • Reporting regularly to staff and volunteer leaders on the Communications Department’s activities.
  • Ensuring that all communications materials and activities are of the highest professional standards and contain positive and consistent messages that promote DU’s mission and protect DU’s reputation.

Key Skills and Knowledge:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, including the ability to explain complicated biological and conservation issues to a general audience. A thorough understanding of the different writing styles appropriate for websites, video scripts, reports, speeches, and other media.
  • Knowledge of the principles of media relations, including best practices for pitching stories, writing and distributing news releases, conducting media events, and measuring the value of different media relations activities to the organization.
  • Skill in delegating specific tasks and managing projects for a busy department.
  • Skill in managing multiple projects simultaneously to meet both short-term and long-term deadlines.
  • Skill in developing and administering budgets.
  • Skill in contract development and negotiation.
  • Skill in public speaking.
  • Knowledge of the principles of wildlife management and conservation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
  • Minimum five years experience in the above areas of focus.
