The Director of Board Affairs is responsible for planning, directing and overseeing TPL’s programs for the effective development of board members and volunteer leadership to support the mission and programs of the Trust for Public Land. This position’s major role is to develop and manage the organization’s relationships with its key volunteers in order to attract the highest-caliber individuals to its national Board of Directors and 25 state advisory boards. Reporting to the President and working closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Chief Operations Officer, the Director creates strategies to attract, motivate, and engage volunteer leaders.  This position is responsible for the overall strategic use of the National Leadership Council.

Essential Functions

  •  40% - On behalf of the President, serves as the lead liaison to the national Board of Directors.  Supports the Board Affairs Committee which oversees membership and nominations, board assessment, and governance issues.  Collaborates with the Chief Philanthropy Officer on board prospects.  Works with the staff to other board committees to ensure a coordinated approach to board engagement.  With the President and Board Chair, plans and convenes quarterly national board meetings around the country and works with state staff on donor cultivation events and field trips held in conjunction with board meetings. 
  • 20% - Staffs the National Leadership Council (NLC) which is comprised of the state volunteer chairs. Works closely with the Chair of the NLC to engage the members and foster meaningful participation and stewardship. Oversees preparations for the regular meeting of the NLC.  As needed, develops additional national advisory groups and taskforces.  For example, this position will work with TPL’s new Urban Program Director to identify, cultivate, recruit, and engage a national advisory group for TPL’s national Parks for People Program.
  •  40% - Oversees all aspects of TPL’s volunteer engagement program, including identifying and developing strategies and best practices for building and enhancing state advisory boards, recruiting effective volunteers, and developing programs for motivating volunteers in fundraising.  Manages the recognition of volunteers, including the process for selecting and presenting awards to outstanding volunteers.  Serves as a resource for State Directors and State Directors of Philanthropy who staff their state advisory boards.  Working with philanthropy staff, sets fundraising goals for state advisory boards, produces reports to measure progress on those goals, and engages state volunteer leaders in a national comprehensive fundraising campaign. Attends and participates in state advisory board meetings as needed. 

The position supervises (with the President) the Coordinator, Office of the President, who provides logistical support for meetings and assistance with volunteer communications and record keeping.

Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Requires a minimum of 6 years of experience in philanthropy, nonprofit management, and/or working with volunteer boards. 
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in successfully identifying, recruiting, engaging and cultivating high-level volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in producing effective programs and large meetings of volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivation and stewardship of major donors.
  • Computer proficiency and knowledge of database programs.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, work weekends and travel.
