The Director of Ally Development and Partnerships is responsible for identifying and cultivating strategic alliances with organizations (non-profit, for-profit and government) that will help advance NPCA’s top policy priorities. The Director will work closely with other members of the Government Affairs staff, Development department, and Regional Operations to find organizations that may not traditionally be considered park advocates yet can expand NPCA’s capacity to influence key decision-makers and powerful constituencies. These new allies should have an interest in seeing national parks fulfill their mission by ensuring the relevancy and health of our national parks for the future.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:                                                                       % of Time
 
Ally and Partner Development                                                                    40%    
  • Assist the Government Affairs team and other departments in assessment and outreach to potential allies whose mission or business interests benefit from a healthy National Park System and who would support NPCA’s top priorities of well-funded and well-protected national parks that are relevant to all Americans.
  • Create, define and regularly update a highly-focused ally development strategy that builds NPCA’s capacity to protect the parks, with particular emphasis on non-traditional allies.
  • Conduct and oversee research and analysis on potential allies.
  • Coordinate NPCA’s involvement in ally conferences, conventions, and other forums.
  • Manage the Ally Development Senior Coordinator, providing guidance on research needs, ally forums, and ongoing communication with select allies.
  • Identify process improvements and tools to connect ally relationship with political targets
 
Centennial Campaign                                                                                     20%
  • Engage allies in NPCA’s efforts related to the upcoming National Park Service Centennial in 2016.
  • Secure ally support for a national constituency building campaign for the national parks.
  • Identify opportunities the Centennial provides to broaden support for the national parks.
 
Interdepartmental coordination                                                                  30%
  • Co-lead the “Connecting People & Parks: Building a 21st Century Constituency,” which is the NPCA strategic initiative to maximize a constituency in support of the national parks.
  • Coordinate with Media Relations team to assess potential public and media reactions to possible alliances.
  • Cooperate with Media Relations and/or Digital Outreach Team to publicize alliances or partnerships, when desirable and necessary.

Policy and Governmental Affairs                                                                 10% 

  • Participate as a full member of the Government Affairs team, remain up-to-date on policy priorities, and help drive strategic involvement of potential allies in policy matters, both national and regional in focus.

Other Functions

Participates in staff meetings, organization-wide meetings, staff committee meetings, and training programs. Attends other meetings and seminars as designated by the supervisor. Assists in evaluation of reports, decisions, and results of the office in relation to established goals. Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
 
TOUR OF DUTY: Full time
 
SCOPE OF POSITION:
Internal NPCA staff contact and external contacts with a wide variety of people and interests, via phone, email and in person. May involve development of relationships with major donors and foundations. Travel required.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BA or BS or equivalent experience. Masters in Public Policy, Business Administration, or Environmental Policy preferred. Minimum 5 years experience in one or more of the following : public relations, government relations, environmental advocacy, or fundraising. Excellent writing, verbal, and organizational skills; experience with national park and public lands issues and environmental advocacy highly preferred; proficient computer skills required (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Experience in nonprofit advocacy and/or conservation strongly preferred.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND DEXTERITY:
Extended periods of time sitting, typing, and attending meetings. Overnight travel required. Some evening and weekend work required.
