SustainAbility is a London-based company with offices in New York, Washington and Zurich. The organisation specialises in helping businesses understand and respond constructively to the challenges of sustainable development. We combine working as consultants with alternative means of influence through our research and campaigning work.

Recognising the increasingly dominant role that emerging economies are playing in global economic, social and environmental issues, SustainAbility has committed itself to working in these countries, particularly India, Brazil, China and South Africa and has being doing so for the last few years. In order to strengthen our presence and embed our work in India, we are opening an office in India in early 2009.

Consequently, SustainAbility is seeking a high quality Director to set up and lead this office. The Director will be independently responsible for all aspects of its work in India – including setting up the office, recruiting the India team, developing its strategy, developing new business and executing consulting and research work. In addition, they will participate in SustainAbility’s emerging economies and global management team, contributing to the company’s organisational strategy and development.

The successful candidate will have worked for at least ten years with, or within, the corporate sector at both strategic and operational levels. He/she will possess a strong knowledge of (a) the Indian corporate and development arena, (b) the social and environmental impacts of business, and (c) how leading businesses are responding.

You should have:

− At least ten years of relevant experience with, or within, the corporate sector

− Demonstrable understanding of and commitment to addressing the environmental and social impacts of corporate action

− Proven abilities as a self-starter, who can start an office, lead and deliver projects at high level

− A proven track record of business development and maintaining client relationships including working with senior decision makers in companies.

− Ability and willingness to develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders holding different and sometimes conflicting views

− An advanced degree in business or a field directly relevant to sustainability/corporate responsibility

− Experience in managing projects to deadlines

− Excellent team worker skills

− Excellent written and spoken English

− Ability and willingness to travel in India and overseas
