ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of the Hong Kong Office acts as the primary representative of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Hong Kong and other major Asian wealth centers where TNC does not have a programmatic presence. The Director is responsible for building and strengthening TNC’s presence and image in these markets, identifying and creating private fundraising opportunities, and helping build strategic constituencies to strengthen support for conservation.
To this end, s/he directs the work of the Hong Kong office, whose primary function is to raise operating and capital funds for Asia Pacific programs, and to create and maximize opportunities for collaboration with and support from appropriate region-wide individuals, entities and associations. S/he evaluates and creates appropriate strategies to extend the support for the Region from potential new markets (e.g. Taiwan, Singapore, mainland China, Indonesia, Korea, and Japan). Working closely with the Region Managing Director and other senior Asia-Pacific staff, the Director participates in the development and management of the overall strategy for the Asia Pacific Council, a high-level, international volunteer leadership group, to maximize leverage and support to the Region. S/he works closely with Asia Pacific Council members to secure principal gifts and to develop strategic partnerships with influential decision makers, corporate partners and high net worth individuals. With the Regional Managing Director and management team, develops the region’s long-range strategic priorities as related to philanthropy and collaborates with the Director of External Affairs to implement the complementary public/private fundraising strategy. S/he communicates a compelling vision of the work of the Region, and cultivates relationships with donors, prospects, volunteers and other partners representing the very highest levels of government, the philanthropic community, civil society and the corporate world. S/he is responsible for ensuring compliance with Conservancy and external laws, rules and regulations.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience as a proven leader in the nonprofit sector, fundraising, advocacy, conservation or related for-profit area.
• Management experience including leading and managing a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent written and verbal fluency in English and Mandarin required. Cantonese language skills a plus.
• Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners.
• Experience in fundraising and budget management.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

• A broad and effective network of contacts across the Region preferred.
• Successful experience in asking for and closing gifts or sales and building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors or clients.
• Knowledge of current and evolving trends in fund raising and non-profit management.
• Understanding of and relevant experience in the culture of the Region.
• Proven success in maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations and an ability to ask for and close major gifts.
• Possesses a working and effective understanding of the basics of charitable gift planning. Knowledge of more advanced gift planning concepts a plus.
• Well organized and self-directed; politically savvy and a team player.
• Successful experience in fundraising and marketing.

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:

• Proposes and implements procedures to enhance overall performance in accordance with short and long term objectives.
• Participates in the formulation and evaluation of broad policies and/or long-term programs, or making decisions, which typically have broad organizational impact.
• Directs major program of strategic importance to the Conservancy through management of multi-disciplinary teams.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:

• Makes decisions independently with little or no opportunity for management collaboration or oversight.
• Decisions may affect organization’s public image.
• Decision may have maximum financial and/or legal impact on the organization.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:

• Broad management and leadership responsibility for administrative, professional and volunteer staff including training and professional development. Establishes clear directions and sets “stretch” objectives.
• Broad financial responsibility includes setting and meeting fundraising objectives, evaluating results and developing corrective strategies as needed.
• Identify, cultivate, and solicit major donors in support of program activities.
• Accepts philanthropic responsibility for organization-wide project/programs.
• Ensures that programmatic commitments, financial standards, and legal requirements are met.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

• Superb communication and presentation skills required; must have ability to persuasively convey the mission & conservation priorities of TNC to diverse groups including major donors, corporate executives, board members, partners and others who are critical to the organization’s overall prosperity.
• Cultivates and develops constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.
• Commands attention, can change tactics midstream, and manage group processes during presentations or
• discussions. Delivers effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to employee groups, managers at all levels, board members, and outside organizations.
• Works well under pressure.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

• Willingness and ability to travel routinely throughout the operating unit and elsewhere as required.
• Flexibility to work long hours during deadline periods.
• Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
