Description

The Director of the Hawaii Fish Trust is responsible for developing, implementing, and fundraising for the Hawaii strategic plan. The Director will develop and maintain strategic partnerships, both internally and externally, to ensure effective and successful implementation of the Hawaii Fish Trust. The Director is responsible for achieving the goals of the Hawaii strategic plan. The Director will oversee the Hawaii Fish Trust budget of over $1M per year.  They will oversee grant-making to local organizations to achieve Hawaii strategic plan.  The Director will supervise the Hawaii Fish Trust team including the Program Manager, Technical Advisor, Development Manager, Research Analyst, and other future positions as necessary. The Director will also coordinate with and support the Moore Center for Science and Ocean in implementing the Marine Program Master Plan and leading the fisheries component of the Global Agriculture and Fisheries Sector institutional priority.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the implementation of the Hawaii Fish Trust including strategy oversight, adaptive management, team leadership and management (incl. direct supervision of program manager, development manager, technical advisor and research analyst, and in-direct supervision of an additional 3 or more staff), administrative compliance and ensuring strong scientific basis for strategy and implementation.
  • Create and manage strong, high-quality partnerships for implementation of the Hawaii Fish Trust (incl. key fishing, government, Native Hawaiian and community leaders, and other diverse stakeholders) through communication, collaboration, and effective partnership building.
  • Raise financial resources, steward existing donors, cultivate prospect donors and ensure timely reporting on existing grants for the Hawaii Fish Trust in collaboration with Development Manager, Moore Center for Science and Ocean’s Leadership, and CI’s Development team.
  • Pursue internal CI strategic collaborative opportunities with other divisions, develop the Hawaii Fish Trust as a model fisheries program for CI’s institutional priority on Global Agriculture and Fisheries, and share Hawaii Fish Trust approach and experiences with other CI programs.

Working Conditions

  • The position will require 25% inter island travel and frequent domestic/international travel. 
  • This position requires a flexible schedule including working numerous nights and weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required 

  • 5+ years experience in marine resource conservation and/or management in the Main Hawaiian Islands
  • Graduate degree in marine resources, oceanography, natural resources management, or related field
  • Extensive knowledge of Hawaii's nearshore marine environment including coral reef ecology, fisheries science, oceanography, watershed cycles, and anthropogenic threats
  • Extensive knowledge of Hawaii's socio-cultural environment including Native Hawaiian and local culture, customs, social dynamics, economy, and history of interactions between environmental groups and fisheries groups
  • Extensive knowledge of Hawaii marine resource laws and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and working collaborations across sectors and between historically-divided groups
  • Demonstrated ability to create high-level strategic partnerships
  • Experience working in the partnership model and achieving goals by coordinating numerous organizations' activities

Preferred

  • Experience managing multi-million dollar program budgets with numerous subgrantees and partners
  • Demonstrated ability to fundraise with governments, foundations, and private individuals
