Position Title:  Director General

INBAR Unit: INBAR Headquarters

Location: Beijing, China

Terms of Employment: 4 years renewable for one term, to start 1 January 2014

The Board of Trustees of INBAR seeks a Director General to take over the strategic and managerial leadership of the Organisation from 1st January 2014.

Over the past fifteen years, INBAR has evolved from a research network into an organisation that addresses bamboo and rattan usage issues across the full range of global environment and development activities. In order to consolidate these achievements, and to guide INBAR for the next fifteen years, a new long-term strategy is currently under development.

Headquartered in Beijing, China, INBAR was established under an intergovernmental agreement in 1997. At present, 38 countries are signatories to the treaty, with the main sources of financing coming from China, the European Union (EU), Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Drawing on this support, INBAR sponsors and provides leadership in international development for member countries through development services and technical programmes in environmental sustainability, livelihood development and industrial promotion.

The position requires a highly experienced candidate who possesses:

- dynamic leadership capabilities and the ability to define goals and execute initiatives for the future development of an international development organisation which is increasingly contributing to the international debate on environmental sustainability;

- strong strategic leadership and a clear understanding of global environment and development issues;

- extensive professional experience at a senior level, preferably with international organisations;

- a proven track record in resource mobilisation and partnership building;

- excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English, and preferably in one of the other three official languages of INBAR;

- experience working in multi-cultural settings; and,

- an advanced university degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. forestry, international relations and/or environmental sciences).

Initial appointment for this position is for a period of four years, renewable for one additional term. The conditions of employment include a salary in the range of US$150,000 and other related benefits.

Application Process:

Applications should be submitted by 31 March 2013 and include a cover letter, a detailed CV, and the names and contact information (phone, fax, e-mail) of at least three references.

Applications should be marked confidential and sent by e-mail to zyli@inbar.int. While all applications will be acknowledged, only candidates whose skills and experience are considered to match the requirements of the position will be contacted thereafter.

  • Application deadline: 2013.03.31
  • Length of initial contract: 4 Years
