The Asia Foundation seeks a Director for Environment Programs (EP) based in its San Francisco office. The Director for Environment Programs is responsible for establishing strategic direction, developing programs, and securing funding from public and private sources in the area of environment. This includes programs related to water security, civil society advocacy for environmental protection, environmental policy and environmental governance, public-private partnerships to advance environmental reform, environmental mediation, and development of partnerships with established environmental organizations. The Director for Environment Programs is responsible for providing conceptual leadership and organizational backstopping for development, implementation, and external fundraising for innovative, high-impact programs at the country level appropriate to the national and local needs and conditions in Asian countries. S/he ensures that the Foundation remains abreast of general developments trends in the field of environmental protection and reform, and represents the Foundation to external partners. The Director supervises EP staff currently based in headquarters and is responsible for managing headquarters engagement with country program staff in this thematic area. Given the nature of the position, the Director is required to spend a significant amount of time away from post (roughly one quarter time, primarily in Asia) subject to availability of funds. The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s or Ph.D. in the environment field or environmental development. They will have at least eight years of professional experience in the design and implementation of environment programs with a strong track record in new program development and innovation. At least three years of experience in program management and staff supervision is also required. Excellent analytic, communication, and writing skills as well as demonstrated team building skills are required as is a strong fundraising record with experience in proposal preparation. Knowledge of and experience with bilateral and multilateral donors as well as the large mainstream international environmental NGOs, especially those operating in Asia, are also a must. Experience living and working in Asia preferred.
