Description

Job Title: Director, Financial Analysis for Advancement Membership & Direct Marketing (MDM) and SIERRA Magazine 

Reports To: Jointly reports to the Senior Director for Advancement Finance & Administration, and the Associate Director for Communications, Operations and Finance

Supervises: Assistant Finance Manager, MDM & Communications, and additional staff as needed

Context: Develops, analyses, and reports on income projections, budgets, expenses, contracts, and business plans for MDM programs and similar business functions associated with SIERRA. Establishes and maintains financial reporting, control and analysis systems and procedures in coordination with Club-wide Finance Department.

Scope: The Director manages and prepares annual budgets and quarterly forecasts for MDM within the Office of Advancement (OoA), and all business functions relating to SIERRA.  Reporting jointly to the Senior Director for Advancement Finance & Administration and the Associate Director for Communications, the Director maintains a close working relationship with the Deputy Chief Advancement Officer, MDM, and provides financial analysis to the Chief Advancement Officer and the Chief Financial Officer. Similarly, the Associate Director maintains a close working relationship with the Manager, Operations & Production for SIERRA, and provides financial analysis to the Executive Editor, Editor-in-Chief, and National Advertising Director. The Director evaluates, analyses, reports, and forecasts on revenues and expenses for a wide variety of operations that generate a substantial portion of the Sierra Club’s operating income. Develops systems and models to analyze and measure financial performance for a diverse array of member-based revenue operations, and consults with fundraising team to identify and evaluate new revenue and /or cost savings opportunities. 

Job Activities: 

  1. Supervises and works with Assistant Finance Manager, MDM & Communications to develop annual income and expense budgets as well as membership and SIERRA print-run forecast. Oversees monitoring and reporting on actual results compared to budget. Responsible for establishing, maintaining and improving financial controls, reporting and monitoring systems.
  2. Advises senior staff within Advancement and Communications on improving processes and financial results on an ongoing basis. Establishes key metrics for and develops reports to monitor effectiveness of various fundraising programs and business plans.
  3. With input from program managers and the Deputy CAO, MDM, develops and maintains all Advancement MDM fundraising financial models, including all models and tables applicable to fiscal year budgeting and forecasting.
  4. Works with the Assistant Finance Manager, MDM & Communications and Director of Membership Resources on the preparation of the renewals revenue and expense budgets. Works with Manager, Operations & Production to align SIERRA print runs with renewals and membership projections on a per-issue basis.
  5. Establishes financial systems and controls for all programs within the editorial and business unit of SIERRA: Develops reports to monitor editorial and production expenses, as well as advertising revenue and expense.  
  6. Works with SIERRA staff and outside vendors to ensure, according to industry standards and Club guidelines, the timely and accurate distribution/fulfillment of SIERRA magazine to both paid and un-paid subscribers, non-member subscribers, advertisers and others. Ensures that all external magazine industry reporting and auditing standards and requirements are met accurately and timely.
  7. Works with SIERRA’s Manager of Production & Operations to meet the information requirements of auditors and other regulatory agents including the SIERRA ABC audit and postal filings.
  8. Works with SIERRA’s Advertising Unit to ensure the billing and collection of SIERRA ad revenue and the administration of the Admate system.
  9. Works with SIERRA’s Executive Editor to ensure the proper tracking, reconciliation and payment of Editorial & Art Permissions. Ensures receipt of grant funding allocations for eligible editorial expenses.
  10. Works with the Assistant Finance Manager, MDM & Communications in the preparation of monthly accruals and general ledger adjustments for Finance and response to Finance's questions pertaining to the monthly closings.
  11. Attends all FinCom meetings for both Advancement and Sierra for actual and forecast reporting, and presentation of budgets.
  12. Works with Advancement MDM, SIERRA, Finance, IT staff, and other managers to develop and improve fundraising, and other program information and reporting systems and structures.
  13. Completes ongoing research and offers creative advice on new and improved practices for increasing efficiency and the financial success of SIERRA. Stays abreast of best practices in magazine production, advertising and editorial accounting.
  14. Provides information to OoA managers, SIERRA, Outings, Executive office, and other Club staff on membership and SIERRA print-run projections.
  15. Undertakes/manages a variety of projects and requests for information as required by the Senior Advancement Director, CAO, Deputy CAO, MDM, and Assoc. Communications Director.
  16. Performs miscellaneous duties as required.
  17. Knowledge & Skills:

-- B.A. degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience.

-- At least 5 years' prior experience at a senior level doing financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting for similar types of operations, including like-sized nonprofit organization, direct response agency, for-profit/direct response marketing, publications and/or media production.

 -- Extensive knowledge of database systems and applications for budget, tracking and reporting.  Ability to act as expert user and communicate effectively with Information System's programmers and analyst.

-- Excellent statistical and analytical skills. Ability to clearly communicate complex financial and performance data

-- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

-- Demonstrated stellar organizational skills, and open to change – flexible in supporting new ideas and initiatives

-- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with respect to confidential data.

-- Ability to effectively interact with others, gain cooperation across department lines, contributes to business decisions and plays a leadership role in assigned areas of operations.

-- Three or more years of supervisory experience.
