Directory Entry : Founded in 1967 as the Environmental Defense Fund, we tackle the most serious environmental problem...a scrappy group of scientists and a lawyer on Long Island, New York, fighting to save osprey from the toxic pesticide DDT. Using scientific evidence, our founders got DDT banned nationwide. Today, we’re one of the world's leading environmental organizations. In the U.S., Fortune magazine called our board one of the country's most influential nonprofit boards. You can see the jobs of the EDF on their website.

Do you have a passion for the environment and a successful background in technology or social media? Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is seeking a big thinker with a solid track record to build a new initiative that will inspire, inform and engage Fortune 1000 companies in reducing their environmental footprint. As the Director, you would direct the overall vision and strategy of the initiative, build a community and innovative collaboration around corporate sustainability, and drive real environmental changes in the business community.

Background: EDF is where policymakers and business leaders turn for win-win solutions. This leading green group, founded in 1967, has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, uncommon partnerships and market-based approaches. You can be part of a vibrant workplace that welcomes diverse perspectives, talents and contributions, where innovation and a focus on results are a way of life. We pioneered the NGO/corporate partnership model and over the past twenty years we’ve helped businesses across the country take bold moves to adopt green practices and technologies that also improve their bottom line. Corporate partners have included DuPont, FedEx, McDonald’s, and Wal-Mart. For more information on our work, see www.edf.org/partnerships.
EDF was recently named the top environmental group in business partnerships by the Financial Times, and is the only environmental group to receive an A rating from Wired magazine. We are building on our success by launching the Environmental Innovation Exchange. The Exchange will provide a platform for innovative new tools and idea sharing to create a new community of corporate environmental leaders. Our goal is to create an essential source for information on substantive actions that companies can take to reduce their environmental footprint, and to engage the majority of Fortune 1000 firms in taking those steps, sharing the results, and creating the next generation of environmental best practices.
Responsibilities: The Director’s role is to drive the development and launch of the Environmental Innovation Exchange, providing the strategic vision to grow and expand the initiative in years to come. Working with staff and contractors, the Director will be responsible for:

-         Developing innovative tools and systems for fostering collaboration between Exchange members;
-         Developing actual programs to augment the virtual Exchange, including training programs for corporate managers, internships, fellowships and others;
-         Managing the annual EDF Innovations Review report;
-         Coordinating with EDF's partnership project managers to translate partnership Innovation into Exchange tools and programs;
-         Developing metrics and processes for measuring and communicating Exchange results, both in terms of environmental outcomes and influence on corporate policies and actions;
-         Gathering user feedback to improve the effectiveness of the Exchange in achieving measurable environmental change and to build new intellectual capital that augments EDF’s reputation and impact in the corporate sector;
-         Cultivating fundraising relationships and engaging with entrepreneurs and investors to identify and promote funding opportunities for significant environmental innovations;
-         Preparing and managing annual budgets for Exchange operations and development.
Requirements: This is a senior position requiring big-picture strategic thinking, creativity, strong management skills and a track record of entrepreneurial success.
