Description

The Forestry Commission is seeking to recruit for the post of Director England. 

Background 

The Forestry Commission is the Government Department responsible for protecting, expanding and promoting the sustainable management of woodlands and increasing their value to society and the environment.

The Forestry Commission works to ensure thatEngland's trees, woods and forests play their part in delivering economic growth, enriching people's quality of life and their environment.  This will be delivered through more and better managed woodlands at a landscape level underpinned by a profitable and economically sustainable woodland sector.  

In order to deliver its objectives, the Forestry Commission works with the private sector, other public bodies and the voluntary and community sectors.  Through facilitating new mechanisms for green investment, it will help realise the opportunity provided by woodlands to grow the green economy by strengthening the supply chain, and promoting the use of wood more widely across society and the economy.

The Forestry Commission is:

Role Description

 

Post title:             Director England 3 Year FTA

                             (Open only to existing Civil Service employees) 

Location:              Bristol 

Reports to:           Director General 

THE ROLE 

The Director England is responsible for the leadership and management of the policy functions of Forestry Commission England and for the Forestry Commission’s operations.  

Therefore, the Director’s role is:

  • To provide leadership, ambition and strategic direction in the establishment, development and continuing evolution of Forestry Commission England.
  • To lead, and be accountable for, the development and delivery of Forestry Commission England’s contribution to the Government’s objectives for growing a green economy and protecting our natural resources through the Forestry Commission mission to protect, improve and expand the woodland resource inEngland.
  • To lead in the strategic policy role for FC England and providing FCE strategic direction.
  • To represent Forestry Commission England externally at high level within Government and with external partners.
  • To be responsible for deployment of Forestry Commission resources, ensuring financial probity and exemplifying Forestry Commission values. 

Key work areas

  • Lead the implementation of the Government’s response to the Independent Panel’s recommendations;
  • Deliver the Government’s Green Growth Agenda; pioneering a new approach that will underpin the way we manage and invest in our trees, woodlands and forests that recognises their full value for people, nature and the green economy. 
  • Provide leadership, ambition and strategic direction in the continuing evolution of Forestry Commission England;
  • Provide leadership and ambition in terms of being an exemplar of sustainability in its own operations and championing that approach more broadly;
  • Forestry Commissioner and member of FCGB Executive Board;

Candidates must demonstrate the following: 

Experience & Knowledge

  • Strong track record of leading a large organisation through a period of significant change;
  • Experience of operating in a political environment at a senior level, dealing with Ministers and senior officials;
  • Strong track record of leading a large organisation to deliver triple bottom line across the three dimensions of performance: social, environmental and financial;
  • Good understanding of sustainable development at a landscape scale;
  • Experience of facilitating partnerships, communication, helping broker investment opportunities and other initiatives to support economic growth by engaging and empowering people.

Terms and Conditions 

Period of appointment 

Appointment for this vacancy will be initially for three years with the possibility of extension or conversion to permanency. 

Availability 

It is anticipated that the successful candidates will take up post in February 2013 

Remuneration 

The current remuneration is £82,900 - £162,500 per annum. 

This appointment is pensionable.
