Context

Climate Change Government Policies are rapidly evolving in the different regions of the world where we operate (14 countries). The different cap and trade and renewable energy schemes represent a potential NPV loss of more than 1 billion $ depending on the different scenarios. Annual savings related to improved energy efficiency represent significant value added opportunities in the actual cost saving environment. Furthermore, those savings can be translated in avoided costs related to indirect GHG emissions. RTA has 5 Mines, 10 refineries and 23 smelters in 27 countries around the world that provide the major (90%, or 900 M$ in 2008) source of RTA's net earnings. In addition, these large, long life, low cost assets emit 65% of Rio Tinto's total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Of key importance looking forward is to sustain the low cost position of RTA mine, refinery and smelter assets, to grow the existing assets as well as new Greenfield assets, to divest poorly performing assets, and all in the context of a future carbon constrained world. Climate change can present major threats and opportunities for RTA's operations and products, and it will be necessary to protect and grow RTA's business in this context. This summarizes the context in which the incumbent must exert his or her leadership in growing and creating future value for RTA.
