The Director of Conservation International’s Hawai'i program is responsible for developing and implementing programs and collaborative initiatives to achieve conservation outcomes in the State of Hawai'i. The Director leads an interdisciplinary team of skilled managers, scientists, and cultural practitioners in the Hawai'i program, and will coordinate with other CI Center for Oceans and Field Division staff, ensuring the effective and successful implementation of the Hawaii program and strategic initiatives across the Center for Oceans. Additionally, the Director supports the vision, mission, and activities of CI’s Center for Oceans and CI’s global oceans strategy, working with the Center’s leadership to ensure the successful coordination of key development, programmatic, and strategic activities. S/he will develop and maintain strategic partnerships (both internally and externally) and manage an effective outreach and engagement strategy to support the Hawaii program. The Director will lead fundraising and development efforts to support core costs and programmatic growth for CI Hawaii’s $1.5M per year budget, including managing relationships with existing donors and grant-making organizations, and cultivating prospective donors for CI Hawai'i and other programs in close collaboration with CI’s Oceans Center leadership and CI’s Development team. The Director oversees the program’s budget, including financial projections and a grant-making strategy, and will ensure administrative compliance and a strong scientific basis for strategy and implementation. The Director will oversee the Hawai'i-based team and will directly supervise three Senior Program Managers, two Science Advisors and a Senior Technical Advisor, and will indirectly oversee several other positions and any other potential future positions as the team develops in the future.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement, and update as needed, the strategic plan for CI Hawai'i, including strategy oversight through implementation of an organizational work-plan, team leadership, management, and capacity development (including direct supervision and in-direct supervision of staff). Supports the strategic plan, mission, and activities of CI’s Center for Oceans and CI’s global marine strategy, working with the center’s leadership to ensure the successful coordination of key development, programmatic, and strategic activities. Implement an effective outreach and engagement strategy to support and realize the Hawai'i program’s conservation outcomes, actively maintain CI Hawaii’s ~$1.5 million per annum organizational budget, financial projections, and grant-making strategy, and ensure administrative compliance and a strong scientific basis for strategy and implementation.
- Raise financial resources to support core costs and programmatic growth for CI Hawai'i, including managing relationships with existing donors and grant-making organizations, and cultivating prospective donors for CI Hawaii and other related Center for Oceans and field division programs, in collaboration with CI’s Center for Oceans leadership and CI’s Development team.
- Develop and manage strong, high-quality partnerships among stakeholders and partner organizations for implementation of the CI Hawai'i strategic plan as well as CI’s Center for Oceans and CI’s global oceans strategy, to achieve desired conservation impacts through effective communication and outreach, collaboration, and partnership building.
- Develop the CI Hawai'i program as an incubator and innovation hub for CI’s global oceans strategy and share CI Hawaii approaches and experiences with other CI programs via collaborative engagement with other divisions and externally through peer-review publications.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position is located in Honolulu, HI
- The position will require up to 25% interisland travel and frequent domestic/international travel. This position requires a flexible schedule including working numerous nights and weekends.
QUALITIFICATIONS
Required
- 5+ years’ experience in natural resource conservation and/or management in the Hawaiian Islands
- Graduate degree in environmental science, social science, biological sciences, natural resources management, Hawaiian studies, or related field
- Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage teams of people, with 5+ years of supervisory experience.
- Extensive knowledge of Hawaii's ecosystems and natural history
- Demonstrated knowledge of Hawaii's socio-cultural environment including Native Hawaiian and local culture, customs, social dynamics, economy, and political climate
- Applied and detailed knowledge of Hawai'i laws and regulations relevant to natural and cultural resource management
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and working collaborations across sectors and among different stakeholder groups
- Demonstrated ability to create and maintain high-level strategic partnerships
- 5+ years’ experience working effectively in partnership to achieve goals and carry out shared activities through coordination of numerous organizations
- Demonstrated ability to fundraise with governments, foundations, and private individuals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated ability to give public presentations and speeches
Preferred
- Experience managing multi-million dollar program budgets with numerous sub-grantees and partners
- Training and/or coursework in Hawaiian history, Native Hawaiian language, studies and/or practices.
- Experience working internationally or with people from other places and cultures
- An ability to build bridges across sectors is absolutely critical for success
