The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal protection organization, seeks to fill a newly created position, Director of Cat Protection and Policy.  The Director of Cat Protection and Policy will lead all cat-related programs, initiatives and projects for The HSUS, including efforts to: a) support and promote Trap-Neuter-Return programs and other initiatives intended to humanely manage stray and feral cat populations; b) promote humane care and treatment of cats in all settings, including animal shelters;  c) encourage responsible care of pet cats, including keeping cats indoors, ensuring that cats receive appropriate veterinary care, promoting the use of collars and tags, etc.; d) address cat/wildlife conflicts; and e) assist local authorities in developing humane cat policies.  Other duties will include, but are not limited to: providing input on cat-related legislation, serving as writer and advisor for various publications, and advising and educating community cat advocates.  Candidates for the position must not only have expertise in a wide variety of cat-related issues, they must also be capable of successfully creating and implementing a vision and direction for the entire HSUS cats program.  A Bachelor’s degree is required, and an advanced degree in biology, zoology, ecology, statistics, or a similar field of study is highly preferred.  Candidates must also have four to six years relevant experience, excellent writing, research and verbal communication skills, willingness to travel, and media savvy.  The salary range for this position is from the high $40’s to the mid $50’s, based on qualifications and experience.
